Mistborn

I thought it was great. After being disappointed by Elantris I almost didn't pick up Mistborn. That would have been a mistake; Mistborn was one of the best books I've read this year. Sanderson has really grown up in his writing since Elantris, and his concepts have always been brilliant.

That's what you get when you write a book, then spend six years trying to sell it. When I finally got a publisher for it, I'd written seven or so books in the meantime. (I wrote Elantris in '99, but Mistborn in 2005. It was the eighth book after writing Elantris, and I never intend the public to see the ones I wrote between.) Essentially, I got a contract from Tor which included my sixth book (ELANTRIS) and my fourteenth book (MISTBORN.)

Still need to work on my dialogue, I think. We shall see what I can do with another six years or so of practice.

Brandon, I actually just got home to find the two nice, crisp hardcovers of the first two Mistborn novels sitting on my bed. They look terrific and I can't wait to get into it.

I'm curious to see the affect that 8 or so novels has on the quality of the writing between Elantris and Mistborn. I'm enjoying Elantris, so if Mistborn is that much better I'm sure in for a treat.

Also, for the rest of you Sanderson fans: I just posted an interview between Brandon and myself over at my blog. We had a lot of fun with it, so I think you should enjoy it! You can find it HERE.

The artwork on the hardcover editions is amazing.

Indeed it is. Many authors would kill to be as lucky as Brandon in the cover art department. I really liked the cover art for Elantris, but the cover of Well of Ascension really blows it out of the water. Terrific art and terrific design really make it a standout.

The Mistborn books are two of my favorite reads this year. I'm disappointed that I didn't read the first one right away when I bought it last year. They have one of the coolest magic systems I have ever read.

They're a definite improvement over Elantris (which I enjoyed as well).

The artwork on the hardcover editions is amazing.

I finished Mistborn a week ago or so and am currently half way through the sequel, A Well of Ascension. I'd say that the quality of the books are very mediocre. Sanderson has some strong points, like his dialogue and action sequences, but I dislike his prose style. He has a tendency to simply tell you what the characters are feeling and thinking in addition to also showing it through what they're doing and saying. The first book also has a weak middle part that drags the whole thing into a halt with all too many balls and tea-parties.

The magic system, however, kicks some serious ass. It's almost so good that it makes up for all the other faults. If you want to you can read my review of Mistborn here.

I really enjoyed Mistborn: The Final Empire last year and I was looking forward to The Well of Ascension.

But for some reason, I'm having an extremely hard time getting into it. I'm a little over halfway through, and I can't stand Vin and Elend, and I feel that the politicking (which makes for a big chunk of the story thus far) is a bit clumsy.

I still have about 250 pages to go, so hopefully things will pick up. . . :)

Is Mistborn a sequel to Elantris? Given the comments here, I'd rather try out Mistborn first, but obviously not if it's a Part 2...

Nope. Mistborn is a trilogy that is completely separate from Elantris, so it's fair game to star with the first novel, Misborn: The Final Empire.
