Jerol
I've gotten a little bored reading about panels at Comic Con. It's degenerated into nothing but movie/TV promotions. But this one, this is one I wish I'd have seen. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/07/sdcc-2014-rulers-of-the-realm
Darth Richard II
How the fuck is Gabaldon on a panel about epic fantasy?
Starkess
How the fuck is Gabaldon on a panel about epic fantasy? Eh, she's written a series that is 8 books and running and features fantastical elements. I wouldn't classify it as epic fantasy in the typical sense of the genre, but it's not that off. Joe Abercrombie
She's sold 40 million books and the TV adaptation premiered at the con. I guess she can be on whatever panel she pleases... Incidentally this was the best panel I've ever been on. Lots of laughs and great answers. I believe they filmed it but I don't think it's been put up yet. Gigei
Rothfuss noted that a writer should ask why they feel compelled to do something like create a map, especially if they don’t particularly care for maps. Exactly. I don't give a flying f--- for maps, I don't know why so many reviewers are going on about maps. Never heard of Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation or the fungi thing lol. I will have to Google it. Lmao about GRRM writing in his bathrobe. This counts? So like, people are writing without any sort of clothes at all? Wouldn't some important bits freeze? Starkess
I liked the bit about the Six Duchies being Alaska upside down. How did I not notice that?! Well, probably because I rarely look at maps, but still. ETA:Lots of pornography features fantastic elements. Have you actually read the books? I have read pornography and I have read Outlander, and pornography it is not. FFS you'd have a better argument that Rothfuss was just writing Kvothe-fairy porn. Darth Richard II
Uh, yes I have. I stopped read the first book when the main character got raped by a guy who sounded like Scrooge McDuck until she liked it. Edit: Before the accusations of me being crazy start popping up, there is actually a ton of material on the internet discussing this and other...problematic scenes from the first book. AncalagonTheBlack
Uh, yes I have. I stopped read the first book when the main character got raped by a guy who sounded like Scrooge McDuck until she liked it. WTF ? Is this really true ? and the author is female..sigh. Darth Richard II
WTF ? Is this really true ? and the author is female..sigh. I don't want to get off topic, but there is uh, debate about the whole thing, and has been since it came out. There was a topic about it here waaay back before I joined when I still lurked. Uh, actually the Outlander books have a reputation for being sex filled. They're also continued debate about if they should be shelved where they are nd not in the romance section. And these are from fans.
Darth Richard II
Ahem, anyway, quality/opinion of said books aside, I still don't get how she ended up on an epic fantasy panel. Yeah, they're huge bestsellers, but to me it makes as much since as putting Bernard Cornwell on a SciFI panel.

Gormenghast
A panel on epic fantasy is not a panel on epic fantasy without Bakker or Erikson. This is a fact (and I wonder why they are never invited at these kinds of events).
Papirolle
This panel was much too short! Very funny, interesting and entertaining, but I wish they had cut short the long introduction of the writers and skipped the questions from the audience if they were gonna do a panel less than one hour. Shinrei
Exactly. I don't give a flying f--- for maps, I don't know why so many reviewers are going on about maps. I disagree...like, a lot. If you write in your own world (and not earth) and you do not provide a map, you're just a) lazy (because "i can't do maps" or "i don't have time for maps" is not a problem...there are professionals who make stunning maps out of your short description or your "looks like a 2 year old drew it"-map-sketch) or b ) cheap ("a map is expensive bla bla"...yeah, right) ... or possibly both. We as the readers don't know where is what and especially if you have a big world and also use it in your book (aka a lot of different places the people go to or live in), then give us a map, so we can follow your journey.
