Third and final year. Jurisprudence is currently the bane of my existence  but I got to choose my other modules so I'm enjoying them.

Currently having a crisis over the whole "I have no idea what I am going to do after my degree" which is giving me sleepless nights...I don't want to have to move back home :( but I don't know what I want to do with my degree and if I can't get a job, or training contract (preferably one that funds your LPC too, because I haven't got the money for that) I will have to move home. So yeah, in a bit of a panic over that.

Glad you are enjoying it. What chambers are you working in again? You did say but it's slipped my mind. Do you specialise in anything in particular?

As someone who has been in this crisis for over two years, I would advise you to apply for an internship or whatever similar arrangement is available in your country and field of study and/or start looking for a job at least three months before graduation in any field that's even remotely connected to your degree. It is also a good idea to get rid of your pride and dignity in advance, though I'm convinced that pays aren't a tenth as humiliating in the UK as they are here.

Well, I would enjoy some more warmth now too, I did not expect it to be so cold so soon, maybe the weather gods will be merciful and give us a few more warm October days. And then snow in December, that would be lovely. :D

Turns out I did not pack any hats or gloves. I mean, it is not a big important thing to forget, just slightly annoying. I guess I can buy a new pair of gloves and a winter hat easily enough.

I was supposed to start today, but they postponed it to tomorrow. So now I am just doing some other work (proofreading) that still needs to be done.

I'm praying for that every year but the weather gods have proven reluctant to grant it for quite some time now.

This is a great excuse to do shopping, I'm sure you can get a lovely hat and pair of gloves.

Oh good luck then! I hope you'll enjoy it.

I would advise you to start thinking about a training contract sooner rather than later, the trouble is I know they're extremely competitive, I only just managed to get a pupilage because of family connections if I'm honest, we specialise in criminal law which suits as its what I wanted to do, as much as there's a lot  more money to be made in other areas.

Have you got any ideas what direction you would like to go in?, I really hope you get where you want to be, FWIW I think you'd make a great Solicitor.

The trouble is, I bet opportunities closer to home are very thin on the ground, so you'd probably have to stay in London, although who knows, you may be crazy and actually like London :P.

Yeah i know i need to sort it sooner rather than later. I'm considering maybe something to do with labour law/anti-discrimination. It works alongside the public law stuff i've enjoyed so far in my degree, and I'm doing labour law this year...you know just typing this out makes me wonder why i havent considered this already.

And i do want to stay in london actually :P I'm one of those crazy folks that likes it here. And there isnt anything really holding me down back home. My family, yes, but its not like its difficult to visit them. Few hours on the train and im there. Whereas in London i've made some kind of life for myself. The biggest barrier to staying here of course is cost  Just as a comparison me and my flatmates looked at whatnwe could get for our rent money outside of london...made for depressing reading.

I would rather be a solicitor. The barrister role doesnt appeal to me (i've done moots, and while i can stand up and present ny arguments its not something i feel comfortable doing).

Criminal law is really interesting, and I'm glad you were able to get into a Chambers specialising in an area you enjoy. It was the module i got the highest marks for in first year.

Thanks for your confidence in me. :)

Thanks. With law you sort of need to start applying...well in the next few weeks.

@Lord Sidious

A very random and small selection, consider it your homework for the night, and no listening to Taylor Swift!!.

These are enjoyable. And trust me, Taylor Swift was never on the table.

Did First really just call Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'old' music?

Eta; glad everything seems to be going okay Buck :)

Also, I hate Exit only tube stations :angry2:

Keep in mind that I am eighteen, all music is old to me :P

My grandfather passed away today, but the man was 93 and died peacefully, so I'm okay with it. Mostly feel bad for my dad.

You say that as though I am an old spinster. I'm only a couple of years older than you :P

Sorry about your grandfather :grouphug: I'm glad he died peacefully and lived a long life though. These thing are always tough of course, but it hurts less when you know they died peacefully

Nonsense, you are ancient and eternal, older than writing and the wheel, one eye watching over the world and the other watching Netflix.
(Honestly though I wasn't aware the RHCP were even still active).

Thanks :grouphug: Frankly I was never that fond of the man, and he had dementia though it felt as if he'd been gone for some time already. But it's still sad.

To kids these days even 2012 music is old music o.O :P

I'm sorry for your loss :grouphug: it must be very difficult for your dad. At least it's some consolation that he lived long and died peacefully, I'm sure your dad too is thankful about that much.

I should lose mine too. And urgently.

It really is.

Thank you :grouphug: And he is, fortunately.

Also without Helena's quote between those reactions that last line sounds pretty wrong :P

If you don't have much luck directly in law firms, consider Compliance departments in the large banks and FIs. Most of them have graduate training programmes where they'll fete you and they will generally pay very well. Compliance has a heavy legal aspect to it, and once you've done that you could look to transfer to the Legal department in the bank.

Thanks for the advice, I will take a look. I have a meeting with the careers department next week and I was planning to ask them about non-law careers too, just to sort of see all of my options

No worries. Hope it all goes well.

And btw, when I say "pay very well" you'd probably be looking at a starting salary of £35-55k plus a bonus.

My advice would be to have an honest long think about what area you want to move in to and just go for it anti discrimination is a good area to go into.

I understand you not wanting to be a Barrister, I certainly think it takes a certain mindset and personality. I don't get why some (nearly always older) Barristers try and look down on Solicitors, becoming either is equally challenging, I considered the Solicitor route too.

You're intelligent and quick witted, you'll make a fine Lawyer, whichever route you choose IMO, and having gone through it myself I genuinely wish you the best in getting to where you want to be :D.

First,

sorry to hear about your grandfather, I hope you and your family are dealing ok :).

I'm glad you liked the music, no Swift, don't tell me you're a Beliber :P.

Lastly, yes RHCP are still active if you could call it that, their last couple of efforts haven't been remotely good, still I suppose they're still just trying to cash in after 90% of their talent walked out of the door.

I really do appreciate the advice you are all giving though

Thanks. I'm alright, my parents will be too.

From what I've heard about Justin he's an utter jackass, so no thank you.

Yes, you've been very clear in your prosecution of their latest projects :P

Hello guys,

I'm typing this from Badhoevedorp where I arrived with my friend on Monday. We had a nice time so far. I visited the Rijksmuseum today and saw the famous "Nightwatch" painting.

Unfortunately, we'll have to go back tomorrow. It was a very nice stay so far. And I hope to return sooner or later.

Will post some more tomorrow.

:cheers::grouphug:

Good to hear. Did you know they cut off like 10 centimeters of the Nightswatch painting because it couldn't fit into the room otherwise? :P

My mother is in love with the Rijksmuseum, and my sister is gonna visit it next week. Never been there myself though.
