That's nice and all, but I'm still just looking for where I can get a gig as an assistant athletic director and make $750k/year.

Ded As Ned
Comes that special time of year, in mid August, when you try to spend some time with your non-sports friends. Because in a few weeks, it's going to turn into "Don't ask me to do anything on a weekend until mid-April. See you then!"
Ded As Ned
The dreaded triple post. 2 weeks and 4 days. UK has only lost one starter to injury preseason thus far... which in the end I'll take. Really looking forward to this season and another step forward for the program. How're your teams faring? Replacing a lot of production at WR, but good potential and a decent amount of faith that Holgorsen has the WR cupboard well stocked. RB's are probably a top 25 group nationally. Likely an upgrade at QB with potential to be a BIG upgrade, but I'm not going to get my hopes up until I see Grier in action and the WR's prove they can get open and catch the ball. A couple key replacements on OL and DL, but the starters are not totally green. Couple of key losses in the secondary, but again, replacement starters are not inexperienced. LB's should be a solid group. While we do lack depth of experience at a few positions Holgs & Co. have done a really nice job of building depth overall and WVU should be pretty solid. Most of the rest of the Big XII is supposed to be a little better this year than last so it's hard to make a prediction. I just want to beat VT on opening day and go from there. I considered mailing Dana Holgorsen an ominous postcard that says only "GET ME THE BLACK DIAMOND". While OOC games don't matter for the conference race I think that if WVU wins that one the ceiling could be as high as another 10 win outing. Lose that one, though, and I think we could be looking at 7 or so win season. Teams that we beat to get to 10 last year are very likely going to be better this time around (specifically Kansas State, Texas, TCU), and instead of playing Missouri ooc we'll be playing Virginia Tech, so this year will be an all-around harder schedule. If we win 8 in the regular season and VT is one of them, I'll be happy. We'll return most of this years' team next year and the potential for a real run at the conference is probably better in '18 than in '17.

It'll be good when the Backyard Brawl comes back in a few years. UK has another soft SEC schedule this year, playing in the weaker east and our two west games are Miss St and Ole Miss... so a lot of fans in these parts have pretty high expectations (8+ wins).... I dunno if I'm THAT high on this year's team, but we are returning a lot of talent on offense, both the line and skill positions. Secondary also returning the talent... but in broken record fashion the defensive line is the biggest concern and we just lost our NFL-hopeful tackle for the season... his backup is a 5-Star sophomore who is great and got a lot of game snaps last year, but behind him there's pretty much no one with any experience. Just no depth on the line and that kills you in the SEC. I really want revenge in the opener at Southern Miss, who came to Lexington last year and upset us by, again, a total collapse of the defense in the 2nd half (that would've been 8 reg season wins). 3rd game at South Carolina will be a good barometer for how the season will go. If we win that one I'll be hopeful. Given traditionally how much we have been terrible, I'll be happy with 6+ wins and a bowl game probably this season and next, before my expectations realistically move above that. Ferrum Aeternum
Since I have no compelling reason to care about my team this year (or the way things are shaping up, for the next 5+ years or so) I'm going to work on adopting this philosophy outlined by SB Nation. Joe Pesci
Penn State coming in at #6, their highest ranking since 1999. It'll be interesting to see if they can continue to build on their accomplishments from last year with the media attention they're getting. Got my Shitt on Pitt t-shirt in the mail last week, so I'm all ready for that game...

But, I work with a guy whose best friend to a WVU player from Martinsburg and the player said there is absolutely no need to worry about Grier. Makes every throw on the field and says he commands the huddle like no other QB he's seen. A true leader and a great guy to boot. And, I've heard this elsewhere also. I think your right in that 18' just might be the year, because of inexperience in D and other areas. But, I have faith in Gibby that he'll make do with what he has. The man is brilliant, imo. Im actually surprised we've retained him and he hasn't went off to a HC job. I think our offense will be potent. We have a stable of backs. Tevin Bush will probably spend a little time in the slot, just to get the ball in his hands. He's the real deal from all I hear. Crawford could well have a historic year, now that we have a QB that teams we HAVE to respect. I agree 18' looks promising, but I think we're alot better than most think this year. A great QB can go a long way in CFB.

A great QB can go a long way in CFB. I have heard similar things about Grier, just trying to keep my expectations in check. He has all the tools, he has at least some experience (and looked pretty good), and if WVU can make a QB out of Skyler Howard I trust them to make one out of Grier. It sucks to lose both Sims and Durante because even though neither were huge producers for us last year, those were the two speed WR's expected to step up. Our WR corps is still good, I think we have the slot well covered and we've got some big, physical guys in Sills, Jennings, and White, but we might lack the burners to fill Gibson's role and stretch the field. I am excited to see the offense though and we'll see one of the better D's we'll see all season in game 1.
