  1. Did happen on occasion though. According to TWOIAF, one Yi Tish emperor kept a dragon at his court because he was married to a Valyrian noblewoman.
  2. The Last Duel takes place in 1386 during the Hundred Years War, which is four centuries before Napoleon's time.
  3. Saw it yesterday. Entertaining but not remotely accurate and far too short as well. Also, I felt the casting was a little off in that Vanessa Kirby looks so much younger than Joaquin Phoenix despite Josephine being a widowed single mother six years older than Napoleon being one of the more eyebrow-raising aspects of their relationship then and now. Speaking of Phoenix, he's a good fit for Napoleon at the end of his life but not when he's up and rising. Oh, and despite being the titular protagonist, I don't think we got much of a sense of who Napoleon was or what his impact on the world has been. Ditto re Josephine. If its historical accuracy and reverence you want, Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon is a much better (if still longer) movie. Kind of surprised no one's made a thread for it actually. Lastly, Scott's fragile ego can get stuffed. If you're going to make a major motion picture about one of the most famous men in history, don't be surprised when people call you out for taking creative liberties, especially the kinds that are completely antithetical to what actually happened. (I agree with @Zorral Napoleon would probably be horrified to see himself depicted as physically assaulting Josephine, much less in public.) @Werthead That's my understanding as well. That an hour or two would have made all the difference and that even if he won Waterloo it was going to take a miracle at that point for Napoleon to hold onto power. Dude should have accepted Metternich's offer back in 1813 to accept being Emperor within France's pre-revolutionary borders.
  4. While I'm looking at things from the opposite side to most people on this board (being an Arab-American/Israeli Arab) I too have conflicted feelings. If I had to put my thoughts into words, I guess I'd say I'm sad things have devolved to such a low point. That and I pray this doesn't lead to violence against Arabs (Muslim as well as Christian) within the 48/67 borders themselves.
  5. The 500 men from Lannisport led by Ser Tyler Hill aren't included in the table for the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye.
  6. According to Yandel in TWOIAF there was one ruling Gardener queen but she doesn't show up on the house's page.
  7. I know. I just meant that was my first impression is all.
  8. @The Dragon Demands I meant more that the actor looks a little too fresh-faced for my tastes. With Cregan, I expect a certain harshness even as a young man. That and, considering how cold it gets in the North, he ought not be clean-shaven. Obviously, YMMV though.
  9. I'll admit I was expecting someone a bit gruffer (not to mention a good deal hairier) for Cregan.
  10. Wrote another short poem, this one titled "Dream of Humanity."
  11. Wrote a poem about Selene and Endymion last night. Title is "Who Woke Endymion?" Also, I forgot to share this but the title for my Lancelot poem is "A Knight's Reflection." Oh, and I'm hosting a digital discount sale in the UK for my first book from 9/11-9/16. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09N9QL1H7)
  12. The UK digital discount for my first book is live from today (9/11) till Saturday (9/16) in case any of you live on that side of the pond and are interested! https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09N9QL1H7 @Derfel Cadarn (Tagging you because you live in the UK and thus might know some people if that's OK. If not, I'll remove it.)
  13. Better than the latter seasons but not as good as the earlier ones. (Truth be told, I don't think there was ever any chance of HOTD S1 measuring up to GOT S1-4, not without taking more time to establish the lead-up to the Dance as opposed to cramming multiple time-skips into just 10 episodes.)
  14. Tales from Mistland & Other Oddities: Volume I is available for 99cents on Kindle.
  15. To my utter bafflement, I wrote a poem about Lancelot today.
  16. @Ser Rodrigo Belmonte II I loved The Monarchies of God. Some of the best-written battles in the genre (with gunpowder!). As for your other question, only the last book is rushed and even then it isn't a bad read, just not as good as the prior four.
  17. @Nevets I think people's complaint about child-brides has more to do with GRRM's histories and backstory than ASOIAF itself, where they're much more prevalent if I recall.
  18. Finished listening to The King Must Fall from Grimdark Magazine. Like with any other anthology, I found some of the stories more enjoyable than others. (In the interest of transparency, I should note this was my first experience with audiobooks.) Anyway, I am now back to reading prose, specifically Stardust, which is first exposure to Gaiman's writing.
  19. Happy 4th of July for those of us in the US!
  20. Currently listening to the audiobook for The King Must Fall from Grimdark Magazine.
