When I first read GoT in 2003 I immediately saw Sean Bean as Ned, even though he doesn't look like Ned and was a bit older. I thought Bean's conflicted hero in FoTR was stupendous and he had the right medieval look and Northern accent to boot. FWIW, I also visualised Peter Dinklage, but that was obvious--he's a good looking dwarf and a great actor. IMO, the casting of both paid off royally.
