Señor de la Tormenta
Little plot hole, random issue or big forshadowing.... Why were Dragons and Stags westeros oficial coins before the Baratheons took the throne?
Fat Trell
Best explanation I've heard is that it has to do with Orys.
Twenty of House Goodmen
Because Orys was Aegon's best friend and right hand man.
Fallout Dude
Maybe it goes back to Aegon the Conqueror and Orys Baratheon.
Pod The Rod
As the three people before me have said, it almost certainly goes back to Orys Baratheon, Aegon's brother, kind of the Jon Snow to Aegon's Robb.
mindchap
The current House Baratheon descends from Aegon I's bastard brother Orys, so it's been the Stags and the Drags since the Targ dynasty took over.
Fallout Dude
On a side note. Is it safe to assume that Baratheon is a Valyrian name?

Ziggy Targdust
Weren't the 'Ratheons like the Targs biggest allies during the conquest

A Bastard Snow
The current House Baratheon descends from Aegon I's bastard brother Orys, so it's been the Stags and the Drags since the Targ dynasty took over. Yea I figure it was the Targ's way of reconizing the contribution the Baratheon's did to win them the throne.

Lord Thornhart
The real question is why are stags still silver and not gold. Or at least why do dragon coins still exist. They are promoting pro-Targaryen views by leaving a dragon of greater value than a stag. Not only is it terrible for political reasons, but it's also hard to believe that the coins weren't changed just for Baratheon pride reasons. Leaders in Westeros have celebrated victory in far more insulting ways.
walkingWITHcersei
Could it be George playing with words? Stag-buck-common as a dollar? Could be a nickname the common folk used. Most commons prob never held more than a stag in their life and a huge stag/buck probably only thing they could dream about in their daily life? Just trying to give a different answer...it's obviously bc of Orys lol
Dorian Martell
Before the conquest each kingdom minted its own coin. For the stormlands it was the stag
The Drunkard
On a side note. Is it safe to assume that Baratheon is a Valyrian name? It doesn't sound Valyrian, and the 'theon' in Baratheon had been used by Stark kings and the Ironborn. Given Orys in general made an effort to assimilate, I expect he chose a Westerosi name to seal the deal.

So the name sticks at least for now.

Leaders in Westeros have celebrated victory in far more insulting ways. Wouldn't it be really difficult to take dragons out of circulation, and promote stags to gold? It would obviously be an enormous task, having to collect dragons, melt them all down, and mint them as stags. And Robert Baratheon wasn't a dick who wanted to rub it in the face of the Targs at the cost of possibly upsetting the economy. He was just glad the Targs were gone. Twenty of House Goodmen
Well, there probably are golden stags in the Stormlands. Aren't golden hand coins still in use in the Reach?
