I don't know what the requirements are to stand for a nationally significant election (Senate, House) in the USA. In the UK it's just a £500 deposit and 10 signatures. While you can in theory run fairly cheaply for house/senate seats, you can't reasonably go for anything worth a damn and you'll not get mentioned any time soon on the news.
