will lib dems keep to their pledge not to form a coalition with either labour or tories?

At the moment, they won't need to. On current projections, the Tories will just need the Democratic Unionists. Cue lots of pork flowing across the Irish Sea.

i'm a total ignoramus when it comes to this, but if labour flips two more seats at the tories expense, thats a hung parliament?

It's Hung anyway, unless something very odd happens from now on.

326 is the magic number, but since the Speaker doesn't vote and Sinn Fein don't take their seats, it's more like 321 or 322. If the Tories are stuck on 310, they are utterly screwed (the Liberal Democrats aren't going to prop them up this time).

As the UK heads to a hung parliament, it seems the big talking points are:

  • Corbyn achieving the first net gain in seats for Labour at any election since the late 1990s (admittedly from a low base!)
  • The demise of the SNP in Scotland, benefitting the Tories, Labour and the Lib Dems (in that order)
  • A return to more traditional two-party politics with the collapse of the UKIP vote

This would be the first election since 1979 where the combined total of the Big Two exceeds 80%, and the first time since 1970 that both have cracked 40%.

Basically, May is toast (hello, PM Boris), pork for Northern Ireland, and another election pretty soon, which Corbyn might well win.

A side-note on the Lib Dems: they lost Clegg but a gain of five seats seems like a decent result for Farron and they may have some influence in the minority government negotiations, as well as any subsequent election.

This is about the best possible result for the Lib Dems. They exorcise the demon by losing Clegg, and are actually viable again.

This thread has probably jumped the shark now that an Aussie, an American and (a very well-informed) New Zealander are running the commentary.

David Dimbleby says the BBC has tried to contact Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Chancellor Philip Hammond and Brexit Secretary David Davis for interview following the election - but without success.

"Senior figures in the Tory party - schtum," he says.

Shit! That would have been epic @commiedore

Two angry flame-haired colonials talking smack and taking shots every time a Tory underperforms. (at least one election could bring us some joy in this twelvemonth)
