Eye color is not as significant to the plot as

many readers believe.

George Martin is known for taking the time to describe his characters in detail.  One of the physical details commonly used to describe a person is their eye color.  With so many characters within those thousands of pages it is easy to understand why our author would run out of colors to use.

Amen on the eye color... in these forums sometimes I swear it's wild what people come up with.  The 10K word summaries on why an insignificant character's name or the choice of a word is actually a shout out to some old little read work of literature are the ones that really get me.

It all traces back to those Japanese cartoons where they zoom in on the eyeballs for 15 seconds, those spasming twitching eyes of tension , so the artists dont have to draw detailed frames, or as many.  But it causes the viewer to ask why the hell am i being treated to this eyeball show?!?!   .....it must mean something!   But What???       Then later when eyes are described in a book you're suddenly on the case to sleuth out why those eyes were mentioned.    Surely there has to be a reason, or else we would have heard a description of their elbows as well, if every body part was equally meaningless......

Quote

"In a sense. Those you call the children of the forest have eyes as golden as the sun, but once in a great while one is born amongst them with eyes as red as blood, or green as the moss on a tree in the heart of the forest. By these signs do the gods mark those they have chosen to receive the gift. The chosen ones are not robust, and their quick years upon the earth are few, for every song must have its balance. But once inside the wood they linger long indeed. A thousand eyes, a hundred skins, wisdom deep as the roots of ancient trees. Greenseers."

eye color is important

Why stick to primary colors.  Polka dots and paisley patterned eyes would bring out the colors of rosy cheeks and freckles.
