No. Australians will now like to say that it is, to lessen how bad this was. But it is not especially common, which is why it makes news when it happens.

By definition, it only makes the news when someone gets caught. It’s actually very difficult to know how widespread the practices are, particularly at the First Class and lower levels. Anecdotally, you hear that mint-sucking and scuffing the ball by bouncing it in are ubiquitous in places like England and Pakistan, respectively. Marcus Trescothick’s autobiography was revealing on this point. And international players, including captains like Afridi, Waqar, Atherton, Du Plessis, Dravid and Sachin have all been successfully penalised by the ICC for ball tampering in the past.

But of course, that is very different to this incident, by virtue of some of the factors unique to the case.

As expected, Warner has emerged from this in by far the worst position of the three. Bancroft’s presser will no doubt prompt some sympathy (some of which is deserved).

ETA: Smith has also given a very contrite presser. Will be interesting to see whether any of these players are successful in an appeal process...

Warner's Twitter statement suggests that eventually he'll front up. But out of the three he's taken much less responsibility so far, despite being the ringleader of it all, so his eventual press conference is going to have to be a masterpiece if he's to successfully rehabilitate his reputation.

Yes I picked up on that. Warner seems least willing to take responsibility - ironic given that he seems to be the most culpable.

Smith has left the country again, which is a good idea from a mental health perspective.

Warner’s statement was very mealy-mouthed and passive voice “mistakes were made”

Yes. Warner's stock is really going down, especially given the Smith and Bancroft press conferences that showed genuine remorse. One gets the feeling that Warner still doesn't think he's really at fault.

Lehmann was always going to go, it was just a matter of time. Staying in place for the Fourth Test is reasonable. There's a few months' break in international cricket after this I think before the ODI series in the English summer, plenty of time for the new coach to be found and the team to regroup.

Jesus, those pressers were hard to watch. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to have some sympathy for them. Warner, not so much.

I haven't seen the Bancroft statement but the Smith one's brutal. I'm not his biggest fan but, yeah, it's hard not to feel for him a bit.

Ali, unsurprisingly, and Woakes, a little surprisingly, are out for England for the second test in New Zealand. Wood, Leach and Vince are in 12 man squad.

I'm not particularly sympathetic about the effects of their bans, but I do feel some sympathy for them being in the maelstrom of criticism this has generated since it must feel a bit like their entire country feels betrayed by them.

I feel like I got caught up in the schadenfreude, but also that I am complicit in the social media witch burning, which I so abhor.

Ha yes a lot of people were calling talkback radio expressing a similar feeling. Personally I still have no problem with the sanctions imposed (and anyway they have the right to appeal to an independent commissioner now). But it’s fair to say that these two guys have a right to redemption. Those calling for life bans etc have probably been made to look a little foolish.

Leach is in for England, which is good. Vince is also back in, which is, er, less good. Wood's also playing which I'm agnostic about; I suppose he's got some pace at least.

ETA: And Vince is in the 3rd over. Great.

Perhaps I’m just worried that this witch burning is just going to make the Australian cricket team even more annoyingly pious and self righteous in the future!

Yes that is something I’m dreading too. I can already picture the ovation at the SCG when Smith cracks a comeback hundred. Blehhhhh.

How is Vince getting a game. Terrible stuff. May as well bring back Mark Ramprakash or Ian Ward.

I suppose when you've just been bowled out for 58 a batsman who specialises in pretty but ineffective 30s might not seem too bad, but I agree that it's an odd choice. I'm not sure why he was even selected on the tour.
