Their mission was already in danger. Ramsay* has pledged to march onto Castle Black and demands things that he suspects Jon has but doesn't (Reek, Arya, Craster's son, and possible Val). He is going to attack the NW if he does not get them. Regardless of what one thinks of releasing Mance with his six spearwives, the watch definitely now faces an existential threat and the worst way possible to prep for it is to cause more disunity among the ranks. Bowen is not especially smart -- one could easily argue he's fairly stupid and vindictive though not entirely wrong in this case -- and him choosing the worst way to remove a LC and pick the worst time is not surprising. * or the author of the pink letter
The Lord of the Crossing
Jon declared war on House Bolton when he sent Mance Rayder to rescue Arya. It was all Jon's fault because he could not keep his nose out of Ramsay's affairs.

Marsh had to act before Jon made the problem much worse. He couldn’t let Jon lead an army to attack the people of Westeros. It violates the role of the Night’s Watch. Treason was already committed when Jon ordered Mance to help Arya. Attacking the Boltons is further treason. Marsh stopped Jon from further treason and by so doing, protected the honor and purpose of the NW and defended the realm.
Texas Hold Em
Marsh felled Jon Snow to save Westeros. Jon lacked the wisdom to keep his feelings in check. Jon was hurting the Order. Here's Looking At You, Kid
Robb was not lacking in smarts when it comes to battles but he was not the right person to rule others. Jon has some leadership qualities but he was also not fit to rule other folk. Those deficits were really their downfalls. The act of treason happened because Jon is a more emotional man compared to the other men on that wall. The other men left their families and lovers behind and they were able to carry on and accepted the rules of the watch. Jon is simple guy but he was not pragmatic. He acts on destructive feelings. Aline de Gavrillac
Jon's story is very familiar because it's the same one of the Night's King. A woman, Arya in this case, led Jon astray from his sworn duties.
