cseresz
At page 66, I've stopped reading. Incest, sexual games between 11 years old kids. Is there a rule among the majority of the fantasy authors that a fantasy novel must contain these things? Please, help me: Is it worth to continue the reading or not? By the way, I did not find any new/prominent element in Brett's work so far.
polishgenius
Yeah, that scene was completely incongruous. In fact I'd pretty much forgotten about it because I basically skimmed it. Yeah, it pretty much gets better from there.
Werthead
I was wondering what the hell people were talking about until I remembered that these were two unrelated incidents. Renna and Beni were playing at kissing with Arlen (who isn't related to either of them). A bit winsome, but they're 11 years old. It was nothing worse than anything in, say, Eddings or Jordan, and there weren't any paedophilic overtones or anything. Kids actually do this stuff. The relationship between Harl and Ilain is extremely fucked up and Brett makes it clear that is the case (Jeph wants to confront Harl over it but is dissuaded). It was an unpleasent, Craster-like moment that defined the negative consequences of the isolation that the homesteads and farms live in due to the threat of constant coreling attack. cseresz
Not just kissing: Show me your thingie! :( There are another problems: no (new, fresh) story/ ideas etc. 1: we have to look after the animals 2: rock demons, wind demons ... 3: Da is coward 4: we have to look after the animals 5: rock demons, wind demons ... 6: Da is coward The current year is 2008, not 1980! In a nutshell, if you like E. Haydon/K. Elliott/J. McKenna then read this book, otherwise I don't recommend it.
Werthead
Your problems are attributal to one simple fact:
At page 66, I've stopped reading.
That's about a tenth of the way into the book. On the comparative scale, The Painted Man is more interesting, more original and more compelling in it's first 100 pages than the same of say The Eye of the World, which is Pure Cliche on Corncheese bread. Myshkin
I'm gonna have to agree with Wert here; read a little further than page 66 before you make a judgment on the contents.
cseresz
after page 100, I have the same opinion as ganoesparan (amazon.co.uk): Instead of being original, as many claim, Peter Brett pulls out almost every cliché from the genre, and does so in a very formulaic way, with lots of repetition as he tries to describe the inner feelings of the lead characters. He touches subjects, like fear and loyalty, and the general human condition of how the choices we make shape our life and that's all very commendable, of course, were it not that it never goes any further than skin deep. This makes it somewhat dull for the more adult reader who wishes some more depth. This is also the reason why I couldn't identify or at least get attached to the main characters.
Blue Roses
I'm going to sort of sit on the fence with this one. I can see where people are coming from with both the positive and the negative posts. I thought the book was quite childish in parts but then also had some promising and well written sections. My main gripe was that I just didn't think the demons scary enough - they all felt a bit Eddings. (Well written exception is the one arm Demon who was sort of endearing which probably isn't the point!). However I found the back story compelling and I hope as the books progress the writing will get more darker and more consistent. I will also pick up the sequel. Larry.
Almost done reading it. Nice flow to the prose. Interesting things transpiring under the plot surface, if I'm not mistaken. Will say more in a week or two, whenever I get around to writing a review of it.
ThRiNiDiR
Great read; I've finished the review and will be posting it in the following days (need the time to go through it again and to type it from my pen notes). I address some of the issues stated here, but all in all one of the best epic fantasy books I've read in quite some time.

Erisort
Im sure he described the cows as bleating somewhere and that was just wrong, sheep bleat not cows. I will have to go look it up, for some reason it really annoyed me. I think it might be because sometime I am kept awake at night because the sheep bleat so freaking loudly and so I have become ather sensitive on the subject. Now I sound like a crazed country bumkin but oh well.
Frost92
He is getting some good following since he released book 1 of is Demon Trilogy. Anyone here read it? I already ordered it, and can't wait for it to get here. The first book is titled The Painted Man. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21F-...L500_AA180_.jpg I also am interested in checking out the Iron Elves series by Chris Evans and the Twilight Reign series by Tim Lloyd. Anyone with any opinions of these series, please let me know if they are worth it. Werthead
Yes, and I've merged the threads :) And you can't put images on this forum, so I've converted them to links.
bossfan2000
Add me to the list of those who after 100 pages aren't really digging this novel. The preteen sex, and adultery & incest are putting me off. Even without that, the characters and story have done nothing for me. I know a lot of you whose opinion i respect really like this book, so I will keep on hoping it finally clicks at some point. I am pretty underwhelmed at the moment. As for the poster a couple of posts above...I just read The Stormcaller and liked it a lot. However, that puts me in the minority on this board, I think. I know most of the commenters in my review said they couldn't finish it, also.
