Rory McCann as Robert Baratheon is a fine suggestion
http://www.alexander-the-great.co.uk/rory_mccann.htm
He played Crateros in Alexander

Bill Nighy as Mad King Aerys Targaryen
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0631490/
(he would also make a good Lord Bolton)

Marton Csokas as Stannis Baratheon
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0190744/
(though Jason Issacs could be good here too; maybe Dougray Scott)

Two suggestions for Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish:

Eddie Izzard (my choice)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0412850/
Great at being a smartass

Andy Serkis

Gollum from LOTR

Richard Wisneski for Garlan Tyrell

He's done lots of independent stuff that is not listed on IMDB, so he would probably accept payment in sandwiches. :-p

Also, if you look on his Myspace, he has a fabulous shoulder length hair. Perfect for the "not quite as hot as his brother" Tyrell.

Rory McCann for Robert is a very good suggestion. 6'6", experience with sweeping epic battles, and the man can act. Perfect for a flashback sequence, anyways.

Here's a still from the Attila the Hun program he starred in for the BBC where he's looking kind of Robert-ish.

Alexander Skarsgard as Rhaegar. He's shown the ability to exude an extremely commanding presence, and even if his commitment to True Blood takes him out of the running for a regular character (like Jaime) the spot-appearances for Rhaegar might still be doable.

Peter Mensah as Jalabhar Xho- I had always expected his character to be expanded, as he is mentioned a few times, and his background as an exiled prince seems interesting. Mensah has a regal look about him....albiet exiled regality lol

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0579795/bio

Brad Dourif as Aerys II- He can pull off a creepy nut job king for sure.
As Ray Winstone is probably to old and expensive the only logical choice for Robert is this man.
Philip Glenister
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0322562/
I still vote for Ray Winstone - he's perfect: rough, loud and used to being in period movies.

I actually saw Tobin Bell as Payne.
Cliff Simon as Littlefinger - Baal was one of the more manipulative Goa'uld.
Adrian Pasdar plays a good oily polititian - would be great to be smiling at you while he stabbed you in the back.

Folks, a reminder: no discussion. Quoting someone and disagreeing with them by way of suggesting an alternative is, technically, discussion.

It's one thing if you want to second a casting suggestion and just say so, but as soon as you explicitly disagree with someone and provide reasons, it's definitely moving into discussion territory. Save that for other threads, not the official casting threads.

I agree with:

-Christopher Eccleston as Stanis
-Ben Barnes as Renly (or Loras Tyrell)

Another Renly suggestion:

I always thought that Bruce Campbell was a shoo-in for Randyll Tarly. I mean, c'mon. But on second thought, he's put on some weight and could actually be a great Robert Baratheon too.

Also... William Dafoe as Mad King Aerys II in flashbacks.

Don't want to break Ran's rules, but I'd like to remind folks that Robert and Stannis are actually young men in their thirties. Stannis might look a bit older due to being so harsh and austere, but I saw a few names of people nearly twice their age... make-up can only work so far without looking ridiculous. :)
Lance Henriksen as Ser Ilyn Payne.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000448/
I know that it's pretty much impossible (a mute character who appears only as an extra in the first three books), but he has a scary, rugged face, which would be great for our favourite executioner. :)
I had exactly him in mind. He's perfect.
Alexander Skarsgard as Rhaegar. Agreed.

My picks:

Joaquin Phoenix as Renly.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001618/
(I thought of Johnny Depp or Christian Bale but they're of course way too big.)

Jude Law as Littlefinger:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000179/
(Again Johnny Depp would be perfect... if only he wasn't so expensive)

Ian McKellen as Barristan Selmy: (probably too expensive again :()
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005212/

Michael Chiklis as Varys would be funny.

Christian Coulson (best known as Tom Marvolo Riddle from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) for Theon maybe? (He might have made a good Jon Snow back in the day). He's a little small for Renly, but would also work as Loras :D in a pinch.

And I'm getting four seasons ahead, but Billy Crudup for Euron. imdb doesn't have a decent pic of him looking crows-eye-ish... maybe something like this pic (zoomed in) will help you'all see where I'm coming from with this suggestion. Imagine that pic, but with an eyepatch, a few more years worth of wrinkles, and ever so slight hint of grey in the hair.
