Cersei Lannister

I think Connie Neilsen (Lucilla in Gladiator) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001567/ would make a great Cersei. If she looks better brunette than blonde, I think she'd be able to play Catelyn Stark as well.

Re: Connie Nielsen as Cersei
She's 43 years old. Remember, Gladiator was filmed almost 9 years ago. She'll probably be nearly 45 by the time they're shooting the pilot. She also has a busy film career (at least 3 films in current stages of production) and has never been a regular on series TV.

Though with her recent plastic surgery, she looks younger now than she did in Gladiator. :)

I did a double take when I saw her interviewed in the Director's cut of Gladiator, she looked so young.

But, she's still too old to play Catelyn or Cersei, though I love her work.

I'd say appearing in 6 episodes of "Law and Order: SVU" in one season gives her some TV presence...

Cercei is about 30 to 35 I believe it's doable. Though I don't know if she would do it for me.

Unfortunately not a good one. I remember she was ok in gladiator, but she was awful in SVU (IMO)

I think a better canidate would be Sophie Myles. She may be a little young (though maybe not when filming is done), but has the right look, is a decent actress, has experience with doing period pieces, has experience doing the probable nudity and sex scenes, and has no problem doing sci-fi / fantasy.

I think she could be excellent too. She is the right age, has the look, and does have a more mature look about her. Not sure about the acting. Have only seen her in National Treasure, where she was so-so. Not sure if she could pull off the "I use my sexuality to get what I want" aspects of Cersei's character.

I agree, and judging by her part as Helen in Troy, she could 'pull off the "I use my sexuality to get what I want" aspects of Cersei's character.'

Add my vote to the Sophie Myles suggestion. Good choice.

Finding a guy that looks like her twin would be a good look for Jaime too, though I'd rather have someone who can really act than have just a good look alike be cast.

I have never heard of her....but she is quite  worthy.

I think she has the look, but since I have never seen her, I don't know about the acting.

You actually bring up a good point. Cersei and Jamie are twins. We tend to think of them as individuals but its important when casting them that the two have simular mannerisms about some things and look alike enough (including age) that people wouldn't question that they are twins.

For example, while I think that Sophie Myles by herself would be an excellent Cersei, I am not sure of someone who could play her twin.

I have suggested that Cillian Murphy may be a good Jamie.

I think the suggestion of Cillian Murphy and Diane Kruger would make a good brother and sister. They also happen to be very close in age.

Note: I was thinking of making the casting of the twins its own thread, but I figured we didn't need another thread on Cersei.

My only problem with Cillian Murphy (who is a great actor) is that he is nowhere near brawny enough to pull of Jaime Lannister. I mean, this is the guy that can only think of five warriors who are stronger than him.

But Sophie Myles is a good choice for Cersei, but you'd need someone with more of a Thomas Jane build for Jaime.

I didn't put this in the "official" casting thread because I'm sure getting her to do the show would be totally unrealistic, but in our family since well before she won an Oscar we all agree that the perfect Cersei would be Charlize Theron. According to Wikipedia, she's 34, so she's the perfect age, she totally has the seductive vibe as well as the ice queen vibe, even won her oscar for playing a "monster"ous woman. I'm sure Cersei in spirit would agree that she deserves to be played by someone who has been nodded as a best looking (or was it sexiest) woman in the world tag by major magazines within the last few years.

And on top of it, again according to Wikipedia, not only has she worked specifically for HBO previously, but in her youth she studied at the JOFFREY ballet in New York! Come on, that has to be some sort of cosmic indicator that it's meant to be. Who knows, maybe she's a closet devoted GRRM fan and would be delighted to take on such a great nasty role....
