Saw a little preview of the UFC Primetime Penn/St. Pierre hype. Gotta say, the Penn death threat is ringing a little hollow to me now. He goes on at length about how the fight is to the death and he is going in there to literally kill GSP. I mean, Sean Sherk is still breathing isn't he? Little over the top for pre fight mind games IMO. Or maybe he's serious? What if he did actually kill GSP in the octagon? That would be just great for the sport now, wouldn't it?

Uncalled for, but I'm sure it won't be the last we hear that Penn's next opponent will literally die in the ring.

I can't believe you guys actually think he might be serious. Of fucking course he doesn't want to actually kill GSP. He's hyping the fight. That's all. They're pretty friendly with each other, and when GSP came to Hawaii to promote their fight a couple months back, him and BJ were hanging out and partying at clubs together. I know that for a fact.
I'll give the fight to BJ with one qualification, he comes in the fight in absolutely great shape. If I see pudgy BJ again...its an easy GSP victory.
BJ's website has been producing a 1/2 hour show that they show here on the islands every Sunday leading up to the fight, and he looks to be in great shape. He has definite muscle definition that I've never seen on his frame at this weight, and win or lose, I don't think there'll be any excuses about gassing out this time. At 4 to 1 odds, could be a lot of money to be made...

I've got tickets to the BJ-GSP fight, so am pretty stoked. Best part is, I'm going to visit one of my sisters who lives in Los Angeles a week before, so I might have a chance to go to not only UFC 94, but also the Affliction show with Fedor vs Arlovski. Not going to buy tickets, but am planning to head over there with my brother-in-law and see if we can get in somehow. Figure they might be comping tickets if its true that its not selling well, or maybe get some scalped tickets one the cheap.

And to be more of a namedropping whore, thought I'd mention that Demian Maia stopped by the gym I roll at last week and gave a seminar. Super nice guy and absolutely amazing grappler. He made everything look so damn easy.

BJ not a big fan of the US?
He has walked in plenty of times with a Hawaiian Independence t-shirt on so I will let you figure it out.

BJ, you lucky sod. Enjoy.

Like Barry said, BJ's always shown support for Hawaii and its displayed in his choice of t-shirts and entrance music. Doesn't mean he doesn't support the US too, though.

He's got some Hawaiian blood (from his mom's side) in him and like 99.9% of Hawaiians here, are fiercely proud of it. And we love him here for never forgetting his roots and staying true to this tiny little island in the middle of nowhere. And I could get into some long, drawn-out history of Hawaii and why some here have very justified feelings of antipathy towards haoles, but that's neither here nor there.

I get that people either love him or hate him, but he perfectly represents the "just scrap" mentality here. And hopefully I don't sound too condescending with this, but I fully expect newer fans who don't know him and his history in MMA to see his comments hate his persona and cockiness. Personally, I love him for it.

Anyways, its going to be a great fight. And that's an awesome image.

The flag thing has raised some interesting discussions on the other web pages. Half the morons there thought it was the U.K. flag he had draped over him.

Personally, I'm more amazed to see GSP draped in the maple leaf. I love the guy to death but figured he, like much of Quebec, was a separatist at heart. Cote's the only Quebec fighter I've ever seen who was not shy about wearing red and white at any opportunity but he was a military boy, so probably has more of a federalist bent than most french Canadians. Glad to see GSP doing the same for once. Especially with BJ wearing a State flag, if GSP did have separatist sentiments, that would have been a perfect chance to wear Quebec's blue and white. He may of course have realized that would cost him some of his unquestioned hard core support in English Canada though. Doubt I'll ever actually know the score there. Just happy to see GSP in my country's colours whatever the deal.

BJ, you mentioned Penn's came out wearing Hawaiian independence gear before. Is that a serious movement/sentiment down there? Just curious, because I'm totally ignorant of the subject.

GSP is a "face," so if he harbors any separatist views, he's being smart by keeping them mum. He sports his fleur-de-lys tattoo and is outspoken enough about his Quebec pride. He doesn't need to do anything more to appease his hometown fans. He wants to be Canada's national MMA hero, so making separatist statements is just a stupid business move.

BJ, on the other hand, is a "bad boy," so he can say and do whatever he wants, the more inflammatory the better, and he'll just get more attention. The "I'm going to kill you, I'm not even joking," statements and slapping a defeated Sherk's face to lick his blood incident are proof positive that BJ can't offend people out of caring about him. At any rate, BJ has always seemed more of a cultural separatist than a political one to me. His shirts have only called for Hawaiian unity that I can recall, and his entrance music by that Iz guy seems to be more about cultural deterioration than colonial overlords. After all, if he were a hardcore political separatist, I imagine he wouldn't really like to use the Hawaiian flag, since it's so clearly a colonial creation. Wikipedia has a link to a supposed original flag of the Hawaiian kingdom. If it's real, I imagine that separatists would prefer that.

Jay Dee Penn. I thought I had said that already?

Look, if some guy's on the sidewalk taking a shit, I'm gonna notice that too. And keep on walking. I'm watching this fight not for BJ or his antics, but for the sport and as a GSP fan.

Actually, I just said that he came out in gear supporting Hawaii, not necessarily wearing Hawaiian sovereignty gear. But I know he's an advocate and member of Kau Inoa and has been featured in some local commercials showing here. Can probably find them on youtube.

As for how serious a movement it is here, it's pretty serious, but not 100%, unequivocally supported by all Hawaiians. I think most of them are supportive of it from a purely emotional standpoint, and haven't really thought thru all the socio-economic problems and ramifications that would result from Hawaiian sovereignty.

And for the record, I don't support it. I understand why they want it, but just don't think its feasible at this time. But then, like many here, I'm a mutt (Norwegian, Korean, Spanish), but I don't have any Hawaiian blood in me. Interesting about GSP's flag of choice, though. I wasn't even aware that Canada had a separatist faction.

And also for the record, while I'm obviously a BJ fan, I'm not a fan of some of his actions (re. licking blood off his gloves) and trashtalking. But you gotta take the good with the bad with your favorite fighters. I'll be rooting hard for Penn, but I'm also a huge GSP fan and have choke respect for him as a fighter and person. I can't wait for this fight.

I wish a certain Ohio guy had that much pride in his state, we'll find out in 2010 if he does...I prefer Penn's style and hope he wins, but he better not talk to much or he may get a "I was not impressed by you performance" after the fight. That's the best pre-fight hype line ever, especially with Hughes' facial expression afterwards.

Good luck with that Hawaiian independence thing.

If they believe anything other than:

-It will be chocked up to a terrorist organization

-FBI will use spook tactics of killing the leaders a la Black Panthers

...then they are morons.

Quebec has an actual chance at separation, as small as it may be. Hawaii has absolutely zero chance. A casino on a reservation is probably as much as they can ever hope for. I truly hope they are smart enough to realize that. 'Scrappy' culture or no, they would not last 30 days in defiance of the US military.

I'm pretty sure that the more level-headed leaders of the movement realize that it's a grandiose notion and most likely not a realizable goal. I'm sure they also know that any way to unite the Hawaiian people is a good thing, and that they can use this platform to perhaps gain other concessions from the government to help native Hawaiians, who are really hurting out here.

And trust me, the last thing we need in Hawaii is a casino. With the number of degenerate gamblers out here (including myself), it would not end well.

Anyways, just watched the first episode of the 3-part 24/7-type show the UFC is producing to promote this fight, and hoo, they're really making BJ out to be a lazy dick. But then, that's pretty much what I expected. There needs to be drama leading up to the fight to attract more interest, and GSP ain't gonna provide it with his nice-guy image. Calling GSP a quitter was stupid, though. GSP's no quitter.

For UFC 93 this weekend, I'm predicting Shogun to destroy Coleman like he should've done the first time, Hendo to take out Franklin, and Kang to beat Belcher.

Sometimes people lose fights. It happens.

He's still very, very exciting to watch.
