Peter Irving
So this is for all you out there who enjoy books hat everybody else seems to hate list the books even explain why you like them.I like Kevin J Andersons Jedi Acadamy trilogy, I also like Dark Saber. Finally I really enjoyed the first two of the Young Jedi Knight series.I liked the Jedi Acadamy sereis for obviously starting the jedi Acadamy on Yavin (which I enjoyed) as well as for its introduction of Exar Kun whose presence I enjoyed in the Tales of the Jedi. Plus it start Leia as head of the NR. Darksabre is ore of a guilty pleasure because it brings the Empire back from the brink and its fun seeing the empire bloody the the New Republics nose a bit. Finally Finally Young Jedi Knights for introducing me to Star Wars. Plus I actually enjoyed the diversity alliance series.
sologdin
nice thread.i like ulysses, tristram shandy, gravity's rainbow, the faerie queene, the morte d'arthur, the aeneid, and the oresteia--no one ever reads those these days.
Renasko
I like Terry Goodkind's books. The most hate-talked figure on this forum. Admittedly, I've only read the first few, which seems to be before he really went nuts.
Centrist Simon Steele
nice thread.i like ulysses, tristram shandy, gravity's rainbow, the faerie queene, the morte d'arthur, the aeneid, and the oresteia--no one ever reads those these days.Funny, I just got into an argument with a terrible "critter" over on a website where you can post your writing. He said the title of my short story (Orestes) was ridiculous. I think he said "this is the worst possible title. What is it? A dog? A person? A town? A robot??"I love the Oresteia for many reasons, but mostly because we get to see Agamemnon get his. And Orestes is a much cooler guy than his old man. The Aeneid is great too if you're a fan of Troy and want to believe they weren't utterly defeated by an asshole king and a whiney ass bitch who was only the toughest because he was impervious to physical attack.I can't get through Ulysses though. Try as I might, I just couldn't make sense of it.For me though I guess the Dune sequels are considered terrible while I love them. There is also a new kind of "hip" thing when you major in literature where you're supposed to hate Steinbeck. I remember being berated by my classmates a couple of years ago for saying I thought Cannery Row was funny.
Ouroboros
I love the Aeneid, for the reasons Simon said. Fuck the Greeks, Hector was twice the man Achilles ever was.I didn't hate the first Eragon book, at first anyway. I liked Gaiman's Marvel 1602. MaesterLuwin
I like the Tom Bombadil chapters in the Lord of the Rings. I also like The Path of Daggers all right, though I won't defend Crossroads of Twilight.I liked reading A Separate Peace in high school when the rest of my class hated it. It appealed to the angsty teenage me, though I don't know how well it would hold up now that I'm older. In a more academic vein, I like reading medieval scholastic philosophers like Aquinas, Maimonides, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, etc. They generally don't get a lot of fans, even within philosophy departments. It's fascinating to me that they looked at the world so differently, and had such a different approach to philosophy, even if a lot of it isn't that applicable to our modern viewpoint. Jussi
I enjoyed the last two books in Greg Keyes' Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone series, I thought The Born Queen was a superb ending. Also: Emperor series by Conn Iggulden.
Strife
I like a lot of books that aren't exactly considered works of art. But is a huge difference for me to say "I liked reading this book" and ""I think this book was brilliantly written". I need both kinds to make my life of reading complete. And I love the Darth Bane Star Wars books :) Enough to consider hardcover of the last one. Jaqen the FatManderly
I enjoyed several of Terry Brooks' books and it amuses me when people trash him while talking up the latest bit of garbage they've been reading.
Galactus
I still unashamedly like the Belgariad.I think that some FR stuff can be great fun, as can a lot of Warhammer stuff.
John_Galt
Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series for me. Say what you want about the guy - at least I didn't have to wait more than a year or two between books, and to date it's the longest series I've completed so far. Rhadamanth
I liked the first few Sword of Truth books but wasn't too crazy about the last ones. I also like Harry Potter, didn't think I would but I did. Drizzt too, I own all of the older omnibuses. I also enjoyed the New Jedi Order series, though the ending was a little weak and the ones after weren't very good.
Shryke
I still unashamedly like the Belgariad.Agreed. It's not the best by any measure, but it moves along and is just so damn readable.
