The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett

I feel bad for the people who buy it based cover who are expecting asian style horror. I mean, where the hell is that woman's hand coming out FROM?

Have you had a stroke in your occipital lobe, or has your visual perception always been that bad?

Yes.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong cover, but the one I remember had the lady's hand placed so it looked like it was coming out of her va-jay-jay.

Let me help you here - she's sitting on her knees, leaning forward, supporting herself with her left hand palm down, and throwing her demon bone dice with her right hand. I think it must be the leaning forward that's throwing off your perspective.

Sorry, sci, the reviews are in, and this is the best book to ever grace humankind,

Random thought #1: Browsed through this at B&N today and ALMOST picked it up for shits(I mean, I read the first 2 and my OCD was kicking in, and it was on SALE!), but oh god, the hillbilly speak.

#2: Not that I pay much attention to non GRRM cover blurbs(he's like, 11/12 on those, but thats another topic), but I think I will now shun all things with Patty Rothfuss, because after this one and Stormdancer, well, he either has shit taste or he's whoring himself out.

I think it's possible to separate Rothfuss the writer from Rothfuss the reader. Just because an author likes a book doesn't mean you're going to. And authors can get caught up in the hype just like everyone else.

I never pay attention to blurbs anyway.

Having recently read the series, including this latest book, I actually think it's pretty good with the noted exception of Leesha (an absolute train wreck of a character in so many different ways) and the vernacular that Arlen and Rena use, which is indescribably terrible. Given that, some of the comments I've read here are unfair, as I see it. Obviously Peter Brett isn't George Martin but he isn't Terry Goodkind either (and I mean that in the best possible sense).

It's next on the list, after I finish Master and Fool by JV Jones (about 100 pages to go). I've got a suspicion we'll all have quite different takes on it. Pornokitsch slated it, whilst SFFWorld gave it a decent review.

I am not encouraged by the book being 800 pages long in hardcover, given that The Desert Spear was badly padded and could have been half the size with no problem.

I may be in the minority but I find the Krasian storyline to be the better story in the series. For me it was Jardir's chapters in The Desert Spear that really got me sucked in. He's by far my favorite character and I root for him more than anyone, but that is mostly because he's pure alpha male, and I hate whiney protagonists.

I wouldn't say that, actually. I probably enjoy the Krasian portion of the story more as well. As I said above, I think it's a pretty good series that's certainly entertaining, albeit, somewhat overly derivative of other works. I don't really hold that against it though. The only two bad weaknesses it has, aspects of the series that honestly take away some of the enjoyment of reading its story, are Leesha and this ridiculous vernacular that Rena and Arlen use.

The latter, I can put up with it to some degree, although what makes it particularly annoying is that it wouldn't have taken much to have just ditched this idea from the start. It adds nothing to the story, is terrible to imagine hearing, and simply comes off as this poorly thought out attempt at being endearing but achieving none of that aim.

Leesha, on the other hand, is this horrible and building catastrophe that just keeps getting worse and worse. I dread to imagine how the author can possibly ruin the character more in coming books and wonder if that's even possible at this point. It really has reached the juncture where, if he somehow manages to salvage her as a decent character in future installments, that would be quite the achievement. I don't know how that can be done though, he has written himself into such a deep hole when it comes to her.

He lost me in book 2 when the raping Muslims of rapeville showed up for rapecon to enter the rape contest.

Oh wait, they're not muslims! They're SPARTANS! He said so in an interview!

This actually wasn't that bad IMO. Jadir had a basic logic to his actions at that point - based on his prejudices but still logical from his flawed understanding.

Leesha's relationship with him, however, was where the book started taking a turn into creepsville. Isn't she tricked into being drunk when she first fucks Jadir?

Maybe. The whole thing takes a turn for the ick. Weirdly, friends in other places online seem to LOOOOOOVE this series, to the point where I think it's time for me to cut myself off the internet and go find a treehouse to reread The Hobbit in.

Female friends?
