MMA 2010: Why Always the Fighting?

And Franklin can land a one punch knock out a la Nate Quarry (a guy with a pretty damned good chin).

Not sure you can consider that a one punch KO. Quarry's nose was smashed all to hell and he had been knocked down a couple of times earlier in that fight. At the time that punch came I'm not sure he even knew where he was any more.

Checked out that link. They were doing a lot of classic self defence stuff that for one reason or another, you never see used in MMA. I'm not sure what, if anything, this will add to Anderson's effective arsenal against Sonnen.

I think Silva would be better off training with a high caliber wrestler right now, but, maybe he's doing that too.

I've always assumed you didn't see it in MMA because it was ineffectual in the cage. A good example of that was when Seagal was showing him how to box the eyes of someone who is going for a double leg. Sure it hurts, but does it hurt more (or is it easier to land) then a knee to the face?

If it was really possible to slip someone's punch and tap them by spinning around behind them and pushing on their nose, I'm sure we would see it more often.

Leben is replacing Wanderlei against Sexiyama. (Sp?)

I don't much care. There are only 3 fights I care about in MMA right now. Carwin versus Lesnar, Silva killing Soennen, (Please let Anderson make a bloody example out of this tard!) and the fight that must happen -- Dos Santos versus Velasquez.

I have no idea who will win between Lesnar and Carwin, but I am leaning towards Carwin ending it early. If he doesn't end it really early, Lesnar probably wins. Exciting stuff. I would be shocked if it makes it out of round one.

More heavyweight fights, please!

I was bummed that the axe murderer got hurt too. I wouldn't say Stego's list contains the only fights I'm interested in seeing, but all three of those would be top five for sure.

And I agree with Ken. I have no idea if Seagal can add anything to AS's arsenal in the cage. Most of the self defence strikes I saw them working would have been totally illegal (back of the head for a lot of them). And I don't know if its illegal or not, but you never see anybody working pressure points in an MMA fight. I know 'small joint manipulation' is a no no, but I've never heard of a rule one way or the other about pressure points (like that nose push thing Ken mentioned).

I like heavyweights. I can't help it.

I do not want to see GSP vs Silva. GSP is amazing, but he's a tiny man. He can't compete with a big man. If they were to give him 18 months and not test him for AAS, maybe.

If anyone hasn't noticed yet, Sherdog has a really awesome article about the 2000 Pride Grand Prix, mostly comprised of rememberances of the fighters and other associated figures. It's really interesting to find out some of the backstage antics that were going on and created a few of the more memorable moments of that tournament. It's also filled with dirt about how Pride was run. I sort of crapped out on my Pride rewatch once I returned to the ranks of the gainfully employed, but I managed to catch the 2000 Grand Prix a few months back. It was surely a classic. It's fitting that this epic heavweight clash comes so close to the 10-year anniversary.

And Fedor's fighting on Saturday, too. So much violence, so little free time!

Cyborg vs Cuddles:

The ref needs to be fired. That fight should have been stopped 8 times.

I've never been more uncomfortable watching a fight.

I'm against female MMA. Sorry. I never want to watch that shit again.

Stego, I like you, but you can be an ass sometimes. If you don't like women fighting, then don't watch it. Noone's forcing you to. I happen to be a fan of it just like I support all women's athletic endeavors. For every one-sided rout, there are good matchups and good skill like this Bellator fight between Rosi Sexton and Zoila Frausto. I prefer women who challenge rather than pamper themselves. You and I are different on that, fine I respect that, but if you don't want to watch it again then stick to that notion and I don't expect that I'll ever have to hear you complain and bitch about it again. Ok? <_<

BTW, check out at 34:00, Breen is talking to you. This isn't boxing. Finny will be fine. She's a fighter. This is MMA, ppl get hurt in MMA. But few die. All of that took place in about 7 minutes. Stop bitching.

Anyway, taking a break from my non-stop attention to the first ever African World Cup for a moment bc a bit of MMA news has apparently been made. The World Cup isn't the only thing that's kept me away from this thread, my personal issues have kept me from doing as much training as I'd like and as such I get a sore spot when I watch any sport but especially MMA while I am getting a bit lazy and not training and turning into a bit of a lazy, worthless piece of shit.

Getting back to the Fedor fight because that's all I'm going to take the time to talk about tonight, bc I have to get back to the goings-on in the Dark Continent like any self-respecting African should, I have to say that if Fedor was ever going to get caught in a fight, this is how it would happen. Looking back, you have to wonder if he was a bit more reckless with his ground attack inside the guard of a BJJ black belt than he had been against Noguiera. Could it have been a sense of his own vulnerability, that he's trying to end fights quicker considering the fact that he's shown more holes in his game recently? But, then again, he's always shown weaknesses in his fights all of his career, that's what makes him more remarkable. No way to shake this, this is a big blow for Strikeforce. They were one "safe" fight away from what could have been perhaps a successful PPV debut. Whether Overeem had beaten Fedor or not it would have been a win bc Overeem is a guy who you could have sold as "the man" if he'd beaten Fedor. Now, even if he wins against Werdum, Fedor wins a rematch and Overeem beats Fedor, he'll only be the second guy to beat Fedor. And the PPV cannot be as big as it could have been. Perhaps SF would have been better served by bypassing this fight and going straight to Overeem vs. Fedor. But perhaps Fedor might have won this one if he hadn't taken so much time off since the Rogers fight. Only by fighting can a fighter maintain fighting form. One thing's certain, this is Strikeforce's Serra vs. GSP moment. Pissed that they didn't show Yancy Medieros fight. I want to see this guy again. Waiting for Hapakane to give me some more info on this guy.

Ok, I'm back on hiatis, to watch the rest of the Cup. I'm sure that my fellow Devil Dog will have some choice words for me, but I'll say in advance that I don't give a shit, and I'm sure that he doesn't really care that I don't give a shit. Just let me get that point across in advance so everyone knows where I stand. And I don't give a flying f*@k if everyone on this damn thread or this forum disagrees with me. I'm just making my point. Peace.

Fedor has been a paper tiger for years. Werdum was not beaten by his mystique, and that's all it took to beat him. (That and avoiding his haymakers.)

Horus, if you did not feel disgust and distaste watching that fight, you're one of the lucky few.

Jan Finney's a fighter. If you ask her, she wouldn't want or feel she needs your concern or distaste for the events of that fight. If you were watching two men fight and the exact same events happened would you feel the same distaste? See my issue is that it's not Jan Finney that you're really trying to protect but rather your own injured sense of propriety.

Ok now I'm back to World Cup matters. See you cats in a week.

I thought the Cyborg fight should have been stopped at the end of the first. And I've got no problem with female MMA. It really is improving quickly. I just thought the challenger was not properly defending herself at the end of that round. But I'm not particularly upset at it, and that chick did have a chin. She came out swinging in round II. I think that Cyborg will hold that strap for a while until the division starts to thicken as women's MMA evolves. Some female wrestler we've never heard of yet will someday come in, throw her on her back and pound her out is how I imagine it'll go down. Women's MMA is just at a point where someone who is dominate in sprall and brawl can reign supreme a la Liddel's hayday IMHO.

Fedor is neither chump or paper tiger in my opinion. He got caught by one of the best HW ju jitsu artists in MMA is all that has happened. Werdun gets uppercutted to sleep by the phenom that is JDS and suddenly everybody thinks he's a chump. Get real man! That's just the nature of this game! Fedor's a man in defeat too and I believe we'll see Fedor return badder and hungrier than ever. I think Fedor's actually happy to see his own idol collapse and he never made any claim that he was going to remain undefeated. Say what you want about the guy, but he's no mental midget, and this defeat will not make him loose his balls and crumble as a fighter. Loosing the pressure of remaining the most undefeated fighter we've heard of has to be a good thing IMHO. Before Fedor got caught it really looked like it was going to be a typical one sided mauling by Fedor. I wonder how many points would have been lost on this fight over in fantasy if anybody was still playing?

Hope Scott Smith isn't pissing blood. I'd rather be head kick ko'd than body kick crumpled imho.

I don't think he was more reckless in this fight than in his past fights against BJJ specialists like Nog, etc. I think he just thought he could power scramble his way out of trouble, like he always has in the past. Didn't work out. It was pretty sad and shocking for me to see him tap. He's been in some absolute wars and to see him finally lose to Ferdum, who's a good fighter but come on, was terrible. It's the end of an era for me, with my favorite fighters all recently losing. He had an incredible run.

I'm not really pro or anti-women's MMA, but the Cyborg fight was brutal to watch. Agree that the female ref was an idiot. I think it's the first time I've ever shouted at the screen "Stop the fight already!" Finney looked like a cement truck ran over her at the end.

Thomson and Cung Le put on some great fights. Overall, great card by Strikeforce, but still a little sad about Fedor.

I'd rather be head kick ko'd than body kick crumpled imho.

I would, too. Body kicks can really suck ass. Especially the ones that just make you go "whoosh". I've been getting back into Muay Thai the last few months, and got absolutely levelled by one during sparring a couple weeks ago. Felt like my liver exploded.

Jan Finney is a woman and a human being. No one should be beaten that long.

Fetal position is not intelligent defense.
