Strip Clubs

But really, there's plenty of porn that is perfectly harmless to all parties to watch. Can we say the same about strip clubs?

Except for the one time a friend got a piece of glitter in his eye, I don't know anyone who has been harmed watching at strip clubs.

More likely, the baitee has become the baiter......

Wait... That didn't come out right.....

I don't get it.

Re: Cantabile

Hidden in my sarcastic response to you is the point that you're missing. Pornography is now produced not just in the U.S., but in other major cities like Prague. In those countries, where rules are lax and where human trafficking from impoverished areas of the former Soviet satellite states is prominent, women are coerced into prostitution and/or other venues of being sexually exploited, including the production of pornography. Any of these information is easily google-able. So knock yourself out.

I acknowledge that. There are countries that exploit women atrociously to produce porn. And this applies to strip bars and brothels run by those types of people as well. So what do you do? Don't support it, and support pornography from countries like the U.S. Just like you'd buy eggs at a farmer's market rather than from WalMart if you disapprove of the treatment of chickens from major egg producers.

But as I said before: it depends particularly on what kind of porn, and where it's being produced. California produces most of America's pornography, if I remember correctly, and on the whole it's very well run, and is just a business like any other. I cannot comment on the porn industries in other countries, as I don't know much about them.

But really, there's plenty of porn that is perfectly harmless to all parties to watch. Can we say the same about strip clubs?

Yes. Yes you can.

Here's the thing - you assume that if you support a strip club you're supporting all of them and all the bad things that come from them regardless of whether that specific one has issues. But then you say that you can support certain kinds of porn from certain people and everything's perfectly fine.

The problem with the porn industry is the industry. It's the whole system that it involves. If you support one element you're far closer to supporting them all than you are with strip clubs. You buy porn, you're supporting the shops that buy all the really nasty stuff, the industry that looks the other way for underage exploitation, drug use and unsafe working conditions, that has at least spawned things like snuff films, the addictive nature of porn - all of these things are funded by your money, and often pretty well directly. Whereas a stripper? They go to a club and strips. Some are better than others. Some owners suck, some don't. There are definitely some worse than others - but strip clubs are usually not chains. They're independently owned and operated. The expectations as to who does what where are very, very different between clubs.

Another fun fact: recidivism. Strippers are often able to stop stripping and do something else for a living. Many are doing stripping to supplement their income or support themselves while doing a day activity that doesn't allow for other hours. According to the "Going Down in the Valley" study of the porn industry something like 70% of all people who do one porn do multiple ones - and most of them say they're only doing the one thing and then moving on.

I am very close to a woman who started out as a prostitute at 16. She mostly turned tricks until maybe 10 years ago as she transitioned into stripping. Her territory was Chinatown in Boston.

She has 3 kids (which is the motivating factor behind finally going to college). She may still turn a trick or two on occasion

I feel really bad for those kids. They shouldn't be going through this.

OR don't support porn, and support stripping in countries like the US.

Or don't support construction workers connected to organized crime, and support those that aren't.

OR any thing else really.

Stripping is not inherently worse than porn or vice versa for any of these reasons. Or if one is, we just spent several pages not proving it in any case making multiple caveats all the while.

So we can discuss the relative harm of these actions inherently, regardless of the industry or go around and around not proving shit and being an entire Ship of Captain Obvious's for a few more pages.

Having a prostitute for a mom.

Do you even know that her children know?

And if they do, do you know that it's a problem for them?

Or is it just a general thing where you assume that being a prostitute must be viewed as shameful by one and all?

ETA

I have more respect for her than I do for most politicians, to be honest. Children of Michelle Bachman? Yeah, they should change their last name and walk around with brown paper bags on their heads on account of the shame for their mom's idiocy. Children of mom who turns tricks for money? Not so much.

It shouldn't affect the children much so long as the mother doesn't involve them in it, and the clients never interact with the kids. I imagine they'd be hurt if they knew of the prostitution, simply from social stigma, but that's mostly their fault that they'd think worse of their mother due to meer societal pressure to disapprove of the prostitution trade.

A job's a job. I think kids would be more harmed having some executive business-type mom who never spends time with them and is pretty much a foreigner in their lives.

So to summarize:

Prostitution = Just a job.

Strip Clubs = Satan's hideaways.

Cool.

Inconsistent troll is inconsistent, yes?

I don't know what utopian planet you live on. But somehow I don't think I would get positive responses if I asked a bunch of kids if they approved of their parents doing that.

Or is it just a general thing where you assume that being a prostitute must be viewed as shameful by one and all?

You're twisting my words. I never said that everyone must hate prostitutes - actually, I think it should be legal everywhere. But I do think that this woman - who apparently didn't do it out of financial need, but mostly for shits and giggles - should start looking for another job now that she has kids in school.

*EPIC FACEPALM*

I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT, AND YOU HAVE NO PROOF, AND YOU PROBABLY SMELL FUNNY THEREFORE I'M NEVER REPLYING AGAIN.

NB:

1. Not really to any of it.

2. I am now imagining how many people are thinking "Damn, is that all it took? I could have done that ages ago...."

Have I said anything about being strippers being bad? No. I've only said that going to a strip club is low class in my eyes. It's the clients I look down on a little, not the workers. I have no problem with prostitutes and strippers.
