Ok, so I read Avengers 2 and I am enjoying it although it feels like Hickman didn't need to create new villains as I'm sure there are lots with the same MO already. The other silly thing that stands out as this should be called "New Avengers" as the arc is about creating a new type of Avengers threats. Minor nitpicks aside it's feeling quite enjoyable so far.

I can't think of anyone that could do the same thing they are trying to do, and besides we're only at the beginning of his run, and I'm sure they role in Hickman's megastory will become more clear later on.

I thought there were quite a few villains who have the plan of making humans stronger by testing whether they can survive attacks. Isn't that kind of what the Celestials, Thanos, high evolutionary kind of does? Maybe I'm just getting mixed up with Stormwatch's current run.

I'm interested to see where Hickman goes with these three villains though and wondering whether they are even defeated in this opening arc or whether they are some long term threat? Maybe the Avengers merely convince these villains to give them time to prove themselves?

They are trying to evolve mankind and the world to the next level. This isn't exactly what any of the others do. Well, perhaps the Celestials, but they rarely have such a hands on, "evolve or die" approach. Thanos is something else entirely.

Yeah, they also seem to be responsible for the Shi'ar evolution, so there's plenty of potential.

Maybe these guys know what the Phoenix force is really supposed to do then? It seems they should at least be in conflict if not part of the same set up.

The villains goal of evolution does tie into Celestials and with Opena having done the Archangel Saga from 2011 [it does feel like] Ex Nihilo and the gang are treading on ground that's been covered.

That said, the idea of Ex Nihilo and the Abyss as gods made by an even more advanced civilization that sent out the Alephs is a cool addition.

Oh, my sweet summer child, there's more Phoenix related clusterfuck on Iron Man and apparently Guardians of Galaxy already in February.

Yeah, which I'll... ignore.

One of those things has Land on art. And let's face it, Land can't actually draw a bird on fire unless there's porn with it out there.

Makes me wonder where he got his Beast references.

He can. That's the scary part. He can draw OK (not spectacular, but still not too shabby). It's just that he's too lazy to actually do it.

Wait, do you think it is overrated or it is that awesome?

It is that awesome. I'm not the most seasoned comics reader by any stretch, but this one blows me away. In 8 short issues I am totally attached to every character. And a few of them are some kind of weird computer/person hybrid who have sex and conceive children in ways I'm not sure I understand. But they make sense in some twisted and perfect way. Serious case of full on boner love for these weird books.

Finally worked out where I thought I'd seen the new Beast design before and funnily enough it turns out to be a Beast design. It was Brute from the alternate mutant X world. Ok he's not green but he has the same numpty head and odd proportions.

Just read Peter David had a stroke as well. Bad news for fans of X-force.

Also. it's funny reading interviews with Marvel staff about Superior Spider-man and how they are trying to kid people that this is the new status quo for a LONG time. I guess based on the frequency of events that change everything a long time is about 3 months though. As far as I'm concerned it's still Peter Parker just behaving differently.

I also agree with the bleeding cool folk who have been arguing with the spidey- editor that Spider-man having sex with Mary Jane Watson (if this actually happens) is technically rape. Only in comics could such a scenario be discussed in terms of rape law though.

Yeah, Peter Parker and Amazing Spider-Man is bound to return sooner or later (next time Marvel needs a sales boost?). And the Mary Jane thing will probably be explained with a "I know Peter Parker better than anyone, and I always knew you weren't him, but don't care" sort of thing, at least it will keep Parker single when he comes back.

If Beast as Brute doesn't really matter, an honestly stupid Beast is probably a improvement of current supposed-genius-Beast.

By the way has anyone read IDW's new Judge Dredd comics? Are they holding up against the original? I have been getting into the old classic Judge Dredd comics recently and are kind of curious.

They can write around the MJ thing. He could just ignore or avoid her out of guilt and then ultimately dump her. When Peter comes back she's with someone else.

They probably have to give this a year and half to save face, at which point they'll change back to Peter once sales drop.

It'd be even worse if he started chasing after Aunt May - although considering both memories are now merged it means Superior Spider-man has slept with his aunite...

It'll last until the next spidey film is out at the longest as that's when Cap America came back. Given how fast their schedule is we'll probably get at least 24 issues of Superior Spidey in a year. Marvel can't really lose as they'll make an event out of restoring the status quo when they get back to it. It still doesn't piss me off as much as one more day did. At least this stunt seems to have been logically thought out. I guess a perk of Quesada no longer being in charge.

Best Shots MEGA-Review: Remender's UNCANNY X-FORCE

Nice overview of the series.

Beautiful art, powerful characterization, and dichotomous themes are key elements to what make Uncanny X-Force such a solid comic book. But the real magic is in the impeccable pacing Remender employs throughout the entire series. From battling the Horsemen of Apocalypse to Wolverine's pain of failing as a father or Betsy cowering in a corner with a fragmented psyche to Wolverine viciously stabbing Creed for the umpteenth time; Remender moves from the action and violence to the motives of the characters like breathing. It is a brilliant balancing act.

Flew through the first two omnibus editions of Sandman, and just downloaded the 3rd. Have to say, this new iPad has totally renewed by love of comic books. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed them, but the iPad is the perfect delivery model for me and I have just torn through a bunch of great stuff over the last week or so.
