Ice and Fire animal project II: Lions

I don't know. . . No long ago in Las Vegas there was a "wild cat" act by a team called Sigfried and Roy. It seems that one of those "tame" and "trained" cats grew weary with pretending to be a "wild cat" and went wild, nearing killing one of his team of trainers. This probably gives rise to the expression, "you can take an animal out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of an animal."

Well, I agree, in their core they are wild. But, animals bred in captivity is no match to free animal. from reflexes, to dietary habits, mating behavior... Too much is different between caged and free animal.

I'm thinking, could this in any way tell us about the Lannisters, how the only Lions left in Westeros were bred in captivity and not as wild as fierce as wild Lions?

Well, you know what to do. Read all the essays, and give us new and wonderful insight I learnt to expect from you.

Great observation. While this touches the future essays, and I hate to jump forward, I will add couple of things. I see this scene also as Cersei's domination over Jaime, the recognition he is more reasonable than she is. Of course, she would never see it that way. Remember when she said to him that she should have been born with a penis. I find Cersei quite interesting for she shows clear psychological desire to be member of the opposite sex. She is the lion trapped in female body. Her recklessness, sexual games with Taena, emasculation of Jaime and idea of being true heir of her father makes Cersei such delicious character. Symbolically, she is lioness, symbol of infidelity throughout the centuries, but she is neither mother, nor wife nor even sister. Her motherhood, although recognizable with her killer instincts to protect her cubs, is on the other hand, quite questionable. She is no obedient wife, for in her marriage, it's undeterminable who is wearing the pants, and as a sister, she positiones herself as equal to her brothers. Cersei, undoubtedly, is a bitter woman whose frustration comes from Mother's nature worse curse - the wrong gender.

On it! :D

Female Lions vs. Cersei:

The thing I found interesting in researching specifically female lions is that with female lions they are the ones that cohabit, nurture and hunt as a "team."

They hunt and bring down the game, take it back to pride, but the male has first pick, then she can eat, followed by the cubs.

In Cersei, we see a female that actively does not like other females, and not necessarily for vanity reasons, but channeling her inner lion as opposed to lioness, she despises other females for their perceived weakness, though she herself beyond dressing as a boy once, is no more affective in openly confronting male strength as did Lyanna, as does Brienne, and now Arya.

Male lions vs. Jaimie:

Looking into behaviors, I noticed similar analogies between the male lion and Jaimie.

In the male lion, we see that they don't participate in the care of the cubs, nor do they help the female with the cubs.

Jaimie observed that he had no feelings for his children. He only cared for Cersei.

Jaimie behaves as protector as did Tywin, but more so for the perpetuation of their "DNA" to strenth. We see Tywin incensed over the marriage of his sister to a Frey and later we see him attempt to match one of his "pride" with the greater beast, the dragon.

And as Mladen noted with the story of the "Rains of Castemere," we see the Lannisters "scorched earth" approach in attacking other "prides," destroying the Patriarchs to replace him with their own DNA, and occassionally killing their own male cubs to keep them from rising up to mate with the females of the pride, so while not direct incest, a suggestion of it.

We can assume that had Jaimie not been transformed to pursue his own legacy, he would most likely kill Lancel, his kin, for his relationship with Cersei.

Lions in North America and Native America Lore:

Lions and cougars roam the ranges of the East Coast, South, Mid Atlantic, Southwest into South America, and finally the West Coast, (many bikers on nature trails have been attacked and killed by mountain lions as we increase our presence into their territories).

However, they are second to the great Grizzly Bear in power and strength, so here in this land, they are not quite kings/queens of the beasts.

For many Native Americans, the great cats are sources of both respect. The Cherokee believe that the Owl and the Cat are sacred for their ability to see into the darkness.

They believed as well that because the lion is both a creature of night and day, they represent balance, but also moderation. As a powerful animal already born powerful, there is no need for hubris.

Other Native American Attributes: Courage, Royalty, Dignity, Authority, Dominion, Justice, Wisdom, and Ferocity.

Attributes noticeably lacking in the Lannisters as they exhibit authority without dignity, dominion without royalty, ferocity without courage, and justice without wisdom.

Maybe they aren't lions after all, and Lan the Clever stole that sigil as well.

A picture of a Mountain Lion, (I think he was in either Pennsylvania, or Connecticut).

First, let me say that this is wonderful post, and in the future essay, we'll talk a lot about certain parts of it...

I would like to reply on this paragraph. There is a clear MO in Tywin's dealing with his enemies. He isn't above ending powerful families, like Reynes, Starks, Targaryens. With Starks, we see beastly nature of retaking the pride. Patriarchs are killed down to last member (or so they believe), and the only woman left is married to Lannister to create a new line. As one of my friends said, this was clear 'Castamereing' of Starks. And it os wonderfully paralleld in nature when we see new male attendings copulating with old lionesses to create their own bloodline.

Done with reading this one, too! (I'm on fire!) Again, this is simply marvellous. Mladen, Your devotion to this project is very inspiring and I can sincerely admit I enjoy reading your essays just as much as I enjoy the books themselves.

However, there was something that caught my eye here.

No, typically no. Also, there is no alpha male in pride. Each pride has several males that are attending the lionesses and their cubs. The situation with Tywin and Tyrion is quite unlikely within pride, but also can indicate nomadic status Tyrion felt he had. And that explains much better the killing.

Actually, there is an alpha lion in each pride - he is the resident male responsible of mating and all that, while the other males, his offspring, are raised and offer their support to him but leave eventually to claim their own pride. I believe there is also an 'alpha' female, not the equivalent of a female alpha wolf, but something of a matriarch to the female members of the pride. As far as gregarious animals are concerned, there is always a leader. A group without a leader cannot function. My knowledge on this topic is minimal compared to the information you provided in the essay, but this one detail seemed out of place. Other than that, you did amazing and thorough job! Looking forward to the sequels, and moving on to the Stag edition!

There are other sayings to be considered when thinking of Lions.

- Lions often eat their cubs

- There can only be one king of the jungle. the Lannisters show (like their sigil) individual strength but can't seem to work together.

Takeaway - When you are the king of the jungle you only have other lions to fear .

House Lannister is being brought down by it's own members just like in nature.
