What if Rhaegar...

...confronted Aerys after returning from the south?

How do you think the scenario would have played out if, after returning from the south, Rhaegar moves to confront/remove Aerys from power to take the throne?

He would at the very least have been imprisoned and could have been killed,he needed the KG on his side he only had 3 of them, there was still Barry and the others to stop him and/or do what ever the King asks of them.

It depends on how he handles it, honestly. If he had done a Great Council that was entirely aboveboard, based on the allegations of misconduct and insanity, it could work out well especially if the rebellion is semi-successful (the rebels are winning but they aren't doing so well that they won't come to the negotiating table).

Rhaegar would have been killed by Aerys as opposed to Robert.

Doubt that. Aerys was pretty mad but he didn't seem like the type that would kill his son and heir. Maybe imprison him sure but Rhaegar would've confronted him with enough support to outmatch his father. It would be interesting to see who the Kingsguard would chose. Duty or friendship.

And btw, it's pretty creepy that you're using E-Ro's photo. :stillsick:

Would Dayne and the other two actually fight against Aerys II?

Judging from their reaction to Rhaella, they would choose duty, and judging how Aerys was already paranoid of Rhaegar to begin with, and his penchant to murder people under little to no pretense that he developed post Duskendale, I would say it's pretty likely Rhaegar dies.

I think he would have done it slowly and calmly as he did know that his father was mad. I think he'd have tried to get the other KG (Ser Barristan, Jaime etc) to support him as King, by saying that he could take over from his father and make peace with the rebels, and how he wouldn't hurt his father. Then get them to escort Aerys away somewhere, maybe Dragonstone with Rhaella and Viserys so he can be with the rest of his family and maybe have a couple of KG with him.

I don't know, really but I think if RR didn't happen there was already a coup planned by Rhaegar and Arthur and Whent at least were part of it.

I don't think they would have raised their blades, but instead they might support a council that declares Rhaegar Prince Regent and then use that is justification to place Aerys into a medieval nursing home.

The only family member he ever hurt was his wife and a husband beating his wife isn't something... supernatural.. at all. Aerys knew Rhaegar was plotting something against him during the tourney of HH yet he didn't hurt his son whatsoever.

I think it would be quite the struggle between the Kingsguard, they were all very dutiful but they were all good friends to Rhaegar. I imagine if Aerys ordered Rhaegar killed that would be the breaking point for their blind duty and honor.

That would be pretty stupid move. Creating mini civil-war between loyalists themselves would only help rebels and make their victory easier.

Rhaegar original plan has much more common sense - first use united loyalists to defeat the rebels and only than confront Aerys. Well, since Rhaegar was killed, it never came into fruition, but still it was a sound plan.

Didnt he tell Jaime something like:" When I return there will be changes"?

He did. Other hints include Varys warning Aerys Rhaegar might be using Harrenhall tourney to announce his plans to overthrow him and Barristan noting than Aerys was mad which even Rhaegar noticed at the end.
