Is TV show trying to correct an unexpected Stannis and danys book reception?

It's really strange and annoying, this whole show/book difference.

I've heard the producers aren't big Stannis fans and therefore probably don't feel the need to portray him positively- which means we can safely assume that they have no honor or sense of duty. :)

I really didn't understand why they fucked up the Stannis storyline, especially the season finale. They overflattered him in the Battle of Blackwater, and maybe they're taking it back now. Ruining the plot moment of Stannis going North was really weird. It would have been an incredible SURPRISE moment in the series and made for good TV. I was suspecting they'd show the Lannisters storming Dragonstone and finding it empty first, and then Stannis popping up North.

Personally I've been pissed at how they've really pornified Melisandre's character- although I'm not fond of her it's sleazy.

Quite frankly, I think Season 3 was a failure on its own. ASOIAF is meant to be a slow, passionate, burning thing, not some fast thing. I was expecting they would be at the halfway point of where they are now. It's not that great of a show overall. Other scenes have been pretty terrible- the killings of Craster and Mormont, the fight between Joffrey/Tywin, Jaime's return... it's all been a bit poor.

I don't think it foreshadows Stannis going evil- if that were the case, I think he'd be evil now. Either they're trying to compensate for depicting him as the Messiah in the Blackwater episode, or they just couldn't care less for his character. Tragic. But pay no mind to the low dealings of traitors and usurpers!

I don't think this effect is intentional, as it's had the opposite effect on me.

IMO Book Dany was quite a badass untill ADWD, where things became more complicated.

TV Danny has been a fucking pain in the arse. Season one was about right. Season two was really really annoying all of her "IMA DRAGON FYAR AND BLUD" over and over, that got dull. And the King of Qarth plot... Season 3 Dany is so Cliché it makes me cringe, and she hasn't really been portayed in a "more badass" way than the books, unless awful "you set yourselves free" speaches do something for you.

TV Stannis and Book Stannis are slightly different, and TV Stannis does seem darker than his book form in some ways and I think he seems more imposing. However Book Stannis only began to really come into the front as awesome halfway through ASoS, before then he was just "The King with the witch" to me. So we'll see what they do with Stannis' best moments (AKA, up North.)

Many of us love stannis because he is the man who choose to put his duty before his rights. something not even robb did. Now he is just the one who ( im going to use your words) goes to the north becouse his witch says so

The only part of Mel's characterization in the show that boiled my beans was the Gendry Leech Bonanza. Other than that, i find show Mel to be more interesting than Book Mel.

He's still doing it isn't he?

It was Davos' idea in the book, it still is in the show its just that Mel spells it out for the viewer. Stannis' willingness to listen to good counsel is what makes him a likeable character, no?

how can they be correcting it if George himself said he was perfectly happy with them ?

come on, he's hardly going to say he's not. besides grrm really understands the world of tv vs books.

i agree with the poster that said the characters are more or less viewed as they should be for where they are in the show. stannis wins most of his fans at the wall and dany looses fans when she putters around essos too long for their liking. posters on the forum may be forgeting that their feelings may be based on being further along in the story.
