Nerolunar
Simple question. Who is your favorite main character?Mine is Lyra Silvertongue. I just love her nature.
The Shadow Wolf
Favorite main character, as in ever?Mine would have to be Bilbo Baggins. During his entire adventure he dreams of home, yet he accomplishes amazing things to help his new friends (with a little help from a certain ring) and he finds a part of himself that he would have otherwise kept hidden. Great character.
thecryptile
hmmm that's a tough one. Lazarus Long, Beowulf Schaefer, and Cugel the Clever all come to mind.
Old-Growth
A few favorite characters: Shevek ("The Dispossessed"). Maya Toitovna (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars). R. Daneel Olivaw and Elijah Baley (Isaac Asimov's Robot and Foundation Novels). There would be others I could name, but four is probably already too many. Toby Frost
Philip Marlowe, who is less of a stereotype than he first seemsThe narrator from Rogue MaleAllan Quartermain from King Solomon's MinesGeorge SmileyAliceMaybe Sherlock HolmesI was thinking about Dune but then Paul is really dull compared to the people around him. You're right - lead characters do tend to be very normal, presumably to reflect the weirdos around them.
