NFL- Week Six: How High A Spread at Mile HIgh

Why?

I don't know what Jace's reason are. But I am happy with the trade.

When the Colts made the trade, they looked like a team still a year or two away from becoming a true contender. They had trouble beating a Raiders team that was considered to be one of the worst teams in the league (they are not great but much better than their week 1 perception). Then they lost at home to Miami. They had two games coming against the Niners and the Seahwks who were widely in the top three in every power rankings (along with the Broncos who the Colts will also have to face). Texans were the prohibitive favorite at that time to win the AFC south. No one thought that Indy was just a a couple of pieces away from contention. So to surrender a 2014 first round pick for a RB who has not had a great deal of success up to that point (mind you his QB was the Weed) did not seem like a smart idea. Experts thought that the Colts should be patient and continue to build a team around Luck so that they can contend soon (but not this year). The Colts management obviously thought that they could win now. So far it looks like they are right. There is some urgency to win now as two of the stalwarts, Mathis and Wayne, have may be a couple of good years left. They will need to find replacements for them in 2015/2016 drafts and there are no guarantees that they will be able to replace a 100+ sack DE and a 10K+ yards WR.

Richardson has been Ok to meh so far. I still think he will be good especially once he knows the offense a bit more (may be after the bye). We will see how that pans out. But I like the thought process behind the trade. After years of dithering and incremental changes under Bill Polian, I am happy that the Colts management has shown that they are willing to swing for the fences.

^ Word, more or less. I've been preoccupied with watching 'Reservoir Dogs', which I had somehow not seen before. I'm now considering watching a Rocky movie, which I have seen before, if anyone cares.

T-Rich has been anything but a world-beater with the Colts, but this will be week 4 with the team, and he's kept the starting job from the likes of Donald Brown and that dude with 'Boom' in his name that Mexal was telling me about earlier. He's averaging like 2.9 yards per carry, but they've got to be the hardest-earned 2.9 yards per carry I've ever seen. I was really frustrated at Pep Hamilton's playcalling a few weeks ago (and I still find it lackluster), but the defense has shown incredible improvement that has allowed Hamilton to stick to the run game long after some OC's with better rushers and worse QB's (BALTIMORE) would be trying to force the pass. It's crazy that the team is averaging 142 yards a game on the ground.

Also, contrary to what someone (I think a Browns fan) said immediately following the trade, Richardson has been awesome in pass protection. Maybe he looked bad in Cleveland because of lack of motivation. I wouldn't sacrifice my body for Brandon Weedon.

What's 2.9 x 4? A first down.

Then again I'm one of those maniacs that as a head coach of any team but Oakland or San Francisco would cut the punter, go for it on 4th down almost every time if you're across midfield and just get your place kicker to learn how to punt for chrissakes if you're pinned back deep.

I was gonna watch Rocky III, but it's not on the Netflix, and it's also not very high on the list of movies for which I'm willing to invite porn-viruses in order to stream.

ETA: What's with the increasingly late start times for the 'primetime' games? It used to be 7:20, then it was 7:30, then it jumped to 8:20, and now it's 8:40. What the fuck?

Give it a pass. That's the one with Mr T I think. Not worth the porn-viruses.

Watching Julian Edelman stiff Brady for a high five never stops being funny.

I'm with you. My primary complaint with coaches these days is conservatism. I think coaches hurt their chances of winning, around the edges, due to overly risk averse thinking. There's beneficial percentages to be played that coaches simply don't because they're more concerned about the downside risk than what they can possibly achieve on the upside. And then there's the overblown media criticism whenever a team fails on 4th and 1 or 4th and 2 in a key spot, but hey if you listen to your critics it won't be long before you're sitting with them. IMO, coaches settle way too often for 40% of the ultimate goal on a given drive by kicking a field goal.

That was my primary complaint with Shanahan's strategy last night though I can't complain in general because he's usually one of the more aggressive coaches in the league. Same way Sean Payton, actually, who I thought made a mistake by going conservative in his playcalls late against the Patriots. They went run-run-pass and run-run-run on their final two drives, both coincidentally three and outs and very un-Saints like. I would argue that's a mistake a lot of coaches make, willingly neutering their high powered offense to be "safe" but I don't think Payton usually does. If you can't trust Drew Brees in that situation, who can you trust?

The flip side is Belichick got a lot of crap for failing on 4th and 6 with 3:30 to go, but I'll defend that process to the end of time. The play BTW resulted in an open receiver who just egregiously dropped the ball in a way an NFL receiver never should. But even beyond the play itself, I think the process was right because how confident are you that you'll be able to get Drew Brees off the field before he could make a first down and get the ball back to Brady? If the Saints hadn't gotten into a shell offensively, I wouldn't have liked the Patriots chances at all. The other benefit was that even if the play failed, the Saints would struggle to run out the clock on their next drive because they simply didn't have enough real estate to work with. They could get in the end zone and NE would still have chance down by 8. Was a ballsy call only because conventional wisdom says you punt there, but I was a fan.

I think Gruden's commentary is going to give me some kind of horrible ear-cancer. I haven't actually watched MNF with the sound on since 2010, and I forgot how hard Gruden tries to build the confidence of every player on the field at the same time. Also, the guy is insane and has the most banal commentary since Madden. "On this play, they're in a formation!"

ETA:

I hate Phillip Rivers. I hate his stupid face, I hate his stupid voice, I hate his stupid comments, I hate his stupid throwing motion.

But most of all, I hate his stupid RB's who are uncoverable coming out of the backfield.

Gruden is entertaining, in part because you can count on him to just latch onto something random and harp on it until it's beaten so far into the ground, it comes out the other side.

Dammit, Pagano, go for it there.

I predict this Colts drive (and thus the game) ends with a turnover.

ETA: No turnover, but it doesn't really matter when the SD offense is going to go on another 10+ play drive and make it a 2-score game again.

I need stupid Phillip Rivers to channel his inner Tony Romo.
