Daenerys big secret

Well , first of all HI

this is my 2nd post since i registed

Daenerys dreams of the house with the red door in bravos ... with a damn lemon tree . NOW THATS BS.

Knowing that Braavos doesnt have almost any trees of any sort because of their poisonous soil (GRRM talks writes about this over and over and over ) what the hell is she thinking about ? She had a home in Braavos , her real home has she recalls living there , but , if it was not Braavos in the first place ?

I dont have any theory about this , but i think we could discuss this more deeper (something tells me that there is something for we to figure out here)

PS: dont give me the un-kiss excuse , Daenerys memories allways made sense to me until now.

Sorry about my english

Cheers

Welcome to the boards... May you have nice and pleasant time here

Now, it means nothing. Daenerys was raised in the palace of Sealord of Braavos who could have afforded nice garden with lemon trees. Arya most certainly didn't venture in those parts of the city. And we know Daenerys was at some point in Braavos. Have people forgotten about marriage plan between Viserys and Arianne that was signed in Braavos?

Well , this is Planetos and i dont think things work that way , if the soil is poisonous it cant grow almost anything there is no "take the poison of my soil and i pay you 100 gold dragons" . I know they were in Braavos but i doubt it was just that , in my opinion she was living in Dorne the whole time .

Braavos, devoid of grass and trees

...

They have no trees, she realized. Braavos is all stone, a grey city in a green sea.

...

In the forest, they see all. but there are no trees here

...

"There's no more wood." Dareon had paid the innkeep double for a room with a hearth, but none of them had realized that wood would be so costly here. Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty."

Thank you for the welcom my friend

There is a theory I remember reading which I liked (but had a few problems) that Dany was raised in Dorne (Lemonwood?) rather than Braavos - linking in with the whole Doran Martel alliance thing.

I think she is misremembering some place from her earlier childhood for Braavos as well. I'm not sure is she and Viserys ever lived in Dorne. If I remember correctly, they sailed straight to Essos/Braavos as soon as they left Dragonstone, though I suppose it's possible. I also wonder if she somehow as memories of Dragonstone before she left.

What? You are not sure that someone can have a garden in Westeros? Lemon trees are not uncommon even in harsher climates, although as some noticed Dany never remembers drinking lemonade. She just remembers the tree. The living in Dorne thing is simply illogical because we have Doran opening his soul to Arianne, and there is no reason why he wouldn't mention "Oh, Targs lived here in Dorne"? They lived in Braavos, the marriage contract itself is one of the irrefutable proofs.

well

"Beyond a line of stony hills the grass grew greener and more lush, and there were lemon orchards watered by a spider’s web of old canals."

Braavos has neither the sunshine, nor the freshwater needed to grow lemon trees.Braavos is a collection hundreds of Islands sitting at sea level in a vast lagoon. The purity of the water and soil is a problem - there's a big chance it could be very infertile for plant and tree growth in general. Also, the canals are not freshwater like in Dorne, Sam has to boil it before drinking (indicating likely brackish water).

Boiling salt water doesn't get rid of the salt. And I must say, Sam sure reads a lot, but I find it very unlikely he would know to capture the steam, and let it condense into drinkable water. Boiling kills germs, not salt.

So, what? I mean look at Amsterdam or Venice. You can still grow things there. Plus, there is freshwater. Otherwise, people would, you know, die of thirst and you can't boil seawater and use it for drinking later. We have been over this tens of times, and nothing even remotely suggests that Dany was raised anywhere else. Also we have participation of Sealord of Braavos who had to be involved somehow for the signing of that marriage pact.

What part of the books is your quote from? I'm not familiar with it, though I assume it refers to somewhere in Dorne. Another possibility is that Dany misremembers the exact nature of these lemon trees. Perhaps the lemon tree(s) is the sigil of someone's house and she misremembers banners with the sigil as actual lemon trees. It wouldn't be Willem Darry's as the Darry heraldry is a black plowman on brown. House Dalt of Lemontree is a possibility, whose heraldry is lemons on purple (Geaux Tigers!). House Lonmouth is another possibility. Lem Lemoncloak, according to popular theory, is Richard Lonmouth, Raegar's squire, who has been missing since the Battle of the Trident. Lemons are commonly associated with his character (as well as kisses, which is one of the main clues we're given to his identity). The latter is quite a stretch, but I felt it was worthy of some mention.

ETA: Here's a resourceful link (ala Westeros itself) of all of the heraldries of Westeros: http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Heraldry/

Can you quote that please?

I really think I'm about to post in the "Things I Never Noticed" thread.

Syrio tells Arya about the things in the menagerie: "terrible walking lizards with scythes for claws". Dinosaur = Terrible lizard.

IF IT WALKS AND IT HAS SCYTHES IS A VELOCIRAPTOR OH MY LORD WHY!???! IS GONNA KILL US ALL!!! <O>

The Sealord of Braavos has a FREAKING DINOSAUR in his menagerie. If he can have a FREAKING DINOUSAUR he can have a lemontree.

Amen :)

Now, here is the link to the image of Braavos from World of Ice and Fire, where it is shown that Sealord's Palace is positioned on the very much green island.

Also, from WOIAF about Braavosi agriculture:

Braavos' lands aren't poisonous and infertile, since according to WOIAF, Braavosi have built the large aqueduct to supply the islands with fresh water.

Spoiler (okay, maybe not):

In AWoW, Arya wargs a Velociraptor.

Fuck dragons. Give me a velociraptor to ride!

Oh no, not the Lemon tree again. Well funny thing Dany keeps finding trees in places where trees should not exist. Braavos the lemon tree. The Red Waste the Peach Tree, and Meereen where trees do not grow she has her very own Persimmon tree at the top of her pyramid. Wow look 3 trees with Dany what a shock. It's almost like 3 is a repetitive theme with her. I think Martin must have forgotten to address the Planetos agricultural almanac, it's like he thinks it's a fantasy or something.
