similar

both hate the Lannisters

both are better dads than Jaimie

Both are second sons

Both had kids that are fighters(Viper with his Sandsnakes, Stannis with his shadow son)

Both have people that are level headed to make sure they do nothing stupid

diffrent

Oberlyn is more of a hot head

The viper love having a good time

Stannis drink only water with pinch of salt

What a bizarrely arbitrary qualifier that is.

They have entirely different approaches to life. Oberyn takes life on as an experience to squeeze everything out of, while Stannis is perpetually suspicious that someone somewhere in enjoying themselves.

One thing they have in common is that they appreciate people due to their value, not their origin.

They are also the complete opposite of their older brothers.

They are also complete polar opposites regarding their dedication to murdered siblings. Oberyn dies to avenge his dead sister, Stannis bails on Bob, then only comments on his demise insofar as it relates to a complaint or criticism of his dead brother.

I'd describe Stannis as being too much of a workaholic to enjoy himself. I mean, when has he been shown to actually be doing something for recreation? Even having sex with Mellisandre is him just doing his job.

Kind of a weird combo of two characters. Stannis isn't really anything like Oberyn, or vice versa.

I'd say their biggest similarity is that they're both second sons that think much differently than their elder brothers, yet serve them anyway. Main difference in that is that Oberyn got along with Doran presumably, whereas Stannis served Robert because he felt compelled to, and begrudged every minute of it.

The difference is the way they view sex. Oberyn sleeps around with all kinds of people, men, women, prostitutes etc. Stannis has only ever been with Mel while he has been married to Selyse and even when he did he felt very guilty about it

Is poisoning someone or using magic in warfare considered dishonorable?

Actually poisoning in the middle ages was considered a heinous crime, but that it occurred in battle was less likely. It was closely associated with women, but also food and drink. Jews were often blamed for poisoning wells. After the Reformation, poisoning became more of crime associated with Catholicism and the popish plot.

In Westeros, is seems acceptable in Dorne, but not particularly widespread. At least I don't recall anyone using in on weaponry.

The Craggomen used poison on their frog spears and on their arrows.

I don't mean to argue because you're right about that little part.

But the real difference between the two is that Oberyn is the very definition of a hedonist while there is no one in westeros more stoic than Stannis. And those two characteristics alone is the reason why they couldn't be more different in almost every single way. Honestly, when it comes to character and the way they seem to think, how are they similar?

How the hell is that savage dimwit similar to Stannis? Apart from the fact that they're both younger siblings of rulers whom they resent but still obey from their positions in the navy, winning great victories and getting zero credit for them, finally competing with their siblings for the throne when the elder brother dies, allying with the Red God to gain their cause...

...

Damnit...

:cool4:

Still it didn't stop common soldiers from dipping their weapons in latrines before battle. You know pictures of men with arrows in the ground next to them? It's not because it's easier. No it's because dirty arrows are more likely to kill in the long run.

They may not have had the accumulated knowledge we do. But they were crafty bastards.

Similarities:

They both hold grudges for years (Oberyn for Elia's death, Stannis for not getting Storm's End)

They both hate the Lannisters

They both use "dishonorable" tactics (poison and shadow babies)

Differences:

Oberyn is pretty laid back, Stannis is constantly grinding his teeth

Oberyn is open minded about sex, bisexual, etc, Stannis only has sex once or twice a year out of "duty"

Oberyn works closely with his brother, Stannis isn't a huge fan of his bros

Oberyn has a sense of humor, Stannis does not

Oberyn, while awesome, is not The Mannis
