KingStannisFan
lol I knew of GRRMs work in the 90's and did not realize it! GREAT episode of The Outer Limits
Richard Writhen
Hmm never saw it. I did watch BATB back in the day tho, when it was originally airing. I also have hardbody love for TFTC...

What are these abbreviations? Yeah you should see it. I watched it again like I don't know, maybe 5 years ago or so.

Humble AK
Have to disagree. Sandkings is my favorite Martin short story and one my favorite stories of his period. The Outer Limits episode was incredibly cheesy. Cheesiness certainly is a danger of adapting that kind of story, but I believe it's not an inevitable outcome. And unlike Game of Thrones, this is a case where the show actually does bear little resemblance to the original work, and the new material isn't anywhere near as good or interesting. Xray the Enforcer
The novelette had tons of atmosphere and a compelling narrative -- I'm not sure it's my favorite GRRM short fiction, but it's up there in the top 5. The TV episode based on it lacked just about everything that made the novelette so awesome in the first place. I always wished that GRRM had written more Wo & Shade stories. Richard Writhen
I'm gonna have to look for the novelette. That sounds straight trippy... I am also a huge fan of Tales From The Darkside and Friday The 13th: The Series... Oh and Monsters. Oh and Amazing Stories. / stops editing with much difficulty
SeanF
Sandkings is a good story, but if I had to pick the best of GRRM's short stories, I'd place In the Lost Lands and The Pear-Shaped Man joint first.
The Marquis de Leech
Sandkings is a good story, but if I had to pick the best of GRRM's short stories, I'd place In the Lost Lands and The Pear-Shaped Man joint first. My three favourites would be In the Lost Lands, The Way of Cross and Dragon, and With Morning Comes Mistfall.

LordStoneheart
Laren Dorr will always be my favorite, then Lya. Two very different romance stories, yet they have similar melancholy moods. He's great at that.
The BlackBear
Read an anthology of his, can't remember most of the names. Sandkings was good, Meathouse Man, The Monkey Treatment all creeped the fuck out of me (in a god way.) Other of the stories stuck with me, like And Seven Times Never Kill Man. I also really liked the one where the woman travelled through gates and kept encountering gatekeepers (trying not to spoil the end,) can't remember it's title though. He's great at that. All his short stories that I've read are pretty sad in various ways. There are no happy endings. Only endings that range from bittersweet to awful. That one is The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr. In addition to those already mentioned, The Stone City is very good.

The BlackBear
A lot of the gods in the temple in Bravos have appearances in earlier GRRM stories.
maarsen
I was reading this up and coming writer GRRM starting in the 70's. Glad to see he made something of himself.
