Jon Snow asks Tycho Nestoris if he'd like to see the top of the wall, because it's "one of the most breathtaking views on earth" (paraphrased except for the earth part)? Why would 'earth' be a word in the common tongue? We call dirt 'earth' because it's part of earth. Wouldn't people from a different planet refer to it as something else?The name Planetos is a fan name used to differentiate between our Earth in reallife and that earth-planet= Planetos. The 'os' on the end is used because just about every other continent is an 'os'. It's easier for reader/viewer to understand it...That's why aliens of Star Wars, Hobbits of Middleearth and people from Westeros speak English.Of course, author can name his world 'Ghyghyland' and use strange terms for plants, animals - but no one would understand what's going on....Also why Russians and Germans in movies like Enemy at the Gates speak English, but with Russian/German accents. I get it. Still, if their planet was truly named Planetos, it would make no sense in any context for a character to say "best view on earth". Planetos being a fan construct only makes perfect sense. Lost Melnibonean Posted December 16, 2015 Share Posted December 16, 2015 Ser Hyle,The "twelve houses of heaven" are inspired by the zodiac, the "seven wanderers sacred to the Faith" are inspired by the seven waderering stars of antiquity (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn), the blue star in the Ice Dragon (either the dragon's eye or the rider's eye depending on whom you ask) is inspired by Polaris, and the "red wanderer" is inspired by Mars, which is a twist since we'd expect Mars to be sacred to the Warrior. We know that Jon got the ships to rescue hardhome and gold to feed the watch, but what does the iron bank get in return?
