  1. Where to start? All my life I have rebelled against authority. For my punishment I have become one. Albert Einstein Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain. Schiller Of course my signature quote also.
  2. I could write a book full of stories about trying to get my kids to sleep, There is even a chapter on dealing with monsters under the bed. When fighting the monster, don't make the sound effects too real.
  3. We know where else that mouth then wants to go.
  4. Hand in pocket? When I was young we called that playing pocket pool.
  5. She certainly is cute. Our Airedale's best friend was a Wheatie. When they saw each other at a distance they would get so excited and could not wait to be together. I think you made a great choice. All the best to both of you.
  6. So Airedales are still a go? Asking for a friend.
  7. Because you overhear her telling her little friends that daddy is getting fat because his penis is getting so much bigger.
  8. Ellison was a complicated man and over the last 50! years my opinion of him as been complicated also. He did help unknown and starting writers but he could also be such a complete asshole. I never met him but I have enjoyed the books so I guess I am on the fence.
  9. Why the pushback? Are people still pissed at Ellison? Personally, I was in my early teens when the first Dangerous visions was published and I absolutely loved it. It was so... transgressive. it appealed to my teenage anti-authoritarianism. Of course this was the 60s/70s and rebellion was in the air. But the stories were soo good! Writers I had never heard of were in those pages and have given me reading material for a life time. Will a final Dangerous Visions be able to do the same?
  10. I have been waiting for this book much longer than I have waited for The Winds of Winter.
  11. I have. I think it may have been an alternative spelling of Carrie or Kerry.
  12. I kept expecting them to bump into Mulder and Scully.
  13. Up here in Canada, the most famous Randy has to be the shirtless assistant trailer park supervisor in The Trailer Park Boys.
  14. I used to read Philip Roth when I was a young lad back in the 70's. Back then I don't think he worried too much about winning a Nobel because he was probably the most widely read American writer. With regards to sexual content, he was so out there writing about masturbation that I suspect a lot of teenagers learned how to do it better from reading Portnoy's Complaint. The book I remember best is Our Gang, his complete evisceration of the Nixon administration. If Watergate did not sink Nixon, this novel would. Who needs a Nobel?
  15. My father was named Noach. (The c is silent) Until just in the last few years I could count on the thumbs of one hand any other Noahs I had ever heard of. Noah Beery is the only one. Now I hear the name everywhere. My dad would be happy. He always wondered what his mother was thinking naming him Noach.
  16. Having on occasion worked as a roofer, all I can suggest is strong back and shoulders and a weak mind. They also work with their shirts off because it is damn hot up there.
  17. Actually I am relieved that Margaret Atwood did not win. Two Canadians in close proximity would have made us unbearably smug as a country.
  18. You asked about sources for my comments on the terrible state of the Soviet weaponry.  Back in the 80's just after the collapse,  all this  was reported in newspapers as there really was no Internet. I was and am an inveterate reader and this stuck in my mind. The US did offer to buy and scrap missiles as most were in Ukraine, who did not want them.  The inspectors found lots to be unworkable as the crews had traded parts for vodka. My newspaper of choice then was Canada's Globe and Mail so that is probably where I read it. Hope this helps.

  19. I was raised in the 60's and I can honestly say that I was never that much into Dylan, even with his Canadian connection in hiring The Band. As a Nobel prize pick, maybe the Swedish Academy realized that the odds were set for a decent payout at Ladbrookes. If you are going with unconventional writing, why not the writers for a show like The Wire?
  20. Um.. you forgot a period at the end of your sentence. That could be considered a death sentence here. Just joking! Welcome to the board.
  21. Alice Munro. Biggest news to come from Clinton since Steven Truscott. Congratulations!! And yes, I am aware she was born in Swingin' Wingham, Ontario.
