Cricket XXII - A Cook's Tour

India have consistently opposed DRS. I'm not really sure why, but they seem to feel strongly about it.

Yet another reason to oppose them having more control over world cricket.

Woot! McCullum gets a double ton, bringing it up with a 6 and a 4. Is it just me or does McCullum seem to be a better batsman as captain (leaving aside any judgement of his captaining ability for a moment) than he was before his ambitions were unfulfilled, while Taylor seems to be a better batsman now that he isn't captain; once he got over the disappointment at being dropped as captain.

Nice! I haven't had a chance to check the Test today, but glad to see McCullum get a double-ton.

10/3. Then again, NZ didn't look so good when I tuned in last night either. 30/4 or summat.

30/3. But yeah, there's still every chance thaat India can recover. Still, the whole follow-on thing always causes some psychological jitters when youv'e only got 7 wickets left and still 290 runs to get. I'll be more confident in a substantial NZ first innings lead when India is 6 down and still short of the follow-on mark.

And good to see that the umpire made the right decision on that 3rd wicket. Some potential for grumbling from India there, but hotspot showing the ball nicked the thumb on the way to the helmet then slip. I doubt a wrong decision would suddenly have India jumping on the DRS train, but if I thought a few bum decisions against them would have that effect I'd be crossing fingers for some umpiring incompetence to go against them for a while.

51/4 not making it easy for themselves.

New Zealand are really in top now with Dhoni out. Good effort from the Black Caps.

A 301-run first innings lead against India is a great start. During the last England tour they had a habit of throwing away winning positions and drawing games they should have won, we'll have to see if they've acquire more of a killer instinct over the last year.

Yeah, although the plummet is worrying (and they've lost their two biggest runscorers from the first innings), Taylor is still in and Anderson presumably next out. So long as those two are in this match is still New Zealand's to lose, and they only realistically need 100-150 to close out the game.

Realistically, getting bowled out relatively cheaply might be an advantage. McCullum's a fairly cautious captain and might delay a declaration too long if the team start piling up the runs again. Moreover, if the Kiwis get skittled on this pitch for small beans, it suggests the pitch is deteriorating to the extent that the Indians will also struggle, especially given relative familiarity with conditions of the two sides.
