Really, when you think about it, all the highborns in Westeros are only an inch away from the slavers in Essos, with their 'ruling is the right of our bloodline' mentality. Perhaps Westeros needs an election? but then, look at how democracy has just become an oligarchy in the Western world - so nah, fuck it, elections don't work either. Long live the Others :D But why is an elected person better in their post than a person who got his position by hereditary procedures? If you stole to feed your family, he'd praise you for standing by them and then cut your hands off anyway - making it harder for your family to eat again.
