Stannis stepping aside

I know this is true, I watched the interview where he said it just a bit ago but what an odd statement to make. I dont see the connection, and even where I could stretch and say I do I think it was odd statement to make. I mean just look at the Tiberius official description from the show - " the son of Livia and her first husband; Claudius' uncle. Tiberius is violent and antagonististic. Although he chafes under his mother's rule, he is manipulated by Livia almost as often as Augustus. After he is forced to divorce his first wife in order to marry Julia, all of Tiberius' good qualities disappear, and he becomes even more of a "bad apple" on the Claudian family tree. As emperor, he begins to display a propensity for bizarre pornography and exhibit many depraved sexual tendencies."

Where is the Stannis in that?

I haven't seen the show, but I've read the book, and early Tiberius is very similar to Stannis.

He:

- Basically has the Baratheon genes: tall, strong, dark-haired, fair-skinned.

- Wears a perpetual scowl.

- Went bald early in life.

- Was unpopular in Roman society.

- Was morose, reserved and cruel (I'd say harsh is more fitting for Stannis).

- Was an extremely succesful military general, who didn't indulge himself during campaigns.

- Kept the officers to the same standard as the grunts.

- Overall had the confidence of his men more than a good-humoured yet undisciplined leader would have had.

There are some differences, like Tiberius being ugly (no one seems to say that Stannis is ugly, just angry), fighting at the front of the battle, and speaking so slowly people wanted to finish his sentences (whereas Stannis is happy to go on big uninterrupted rants at people), but they're all fairly minor. The main differences come after (IIRC) he realises how powerful/dangerous Livia is, and starts sucking up to her (which is something Stannis would never do). Then he progresses into crazy town and ends up fucking kids on an island somewhere while letting his lackeys run the empire for him.

It rightfully belongs to him.

The throne was taken by Robert Baratheon, and Stannis is his only and legitimate heir.

That may be true but he is not recognized as such and he is currently not stting on the IT. Anyone who wants that throne has to steal it from the legitimately recognized King of Westeros, Tommen the First of his Name.

If Thief A steals my watch, and then Thief B steals the watch from Thief B, Thief B is still stealing my watch.

Same logic applies to Daenerys and Aegon. It still doesn't change the fact that you no longer have pocession of your watch and that you are going to have to steal it back if you want it.

Robert's claim comes from his Targ grandmother and Viserys being in exile. Aegon's claim is greater than Robert's and his children.

No it doesn't. Robert's claim came from the fact that his warhammer was making out with Rhaegar's chest.

Since when conquering something is stealing something? Since when Tommen is the recognized king of Westeros?

Aegon (if real) has a claim

Daenerys has a claim

Jon (if legitimate) has a claim

Stannis has a claim

Shireen has a claim

Myrcella has a claim

Hell, all of Roberts bastards have a claim, albeit extremely weak ones

Among these, Aegon, Dany, and Stannis are the only ones who actually have a claim to the Iron Throne, and Stannis's claim is the strongest.

For arguments sake, say Aegon ends up on the throne once the Lannisters are out of the Red Keep. That would mean Stannis is no longer has the rightful claim to the throne. Do you think he would stand aside for the rightful Targaryen family to continue their rule, or would he usurp?

Since his whole claim has been about him having the best claim, surely he would stand aside. Thoughts?

i think Stannis is using his whole "it's mine by right" argument as just a on the surface reason of why he wants the Throne. I think Stannis really wants the Throne for its gold and glory and riches and all the power it commands. His whole life he has been living in the shadow of Robert, and he hated that. Robert wins the Iron Throne and instead of getting Storms End he ends up with sh**y DragonStone and Renly gets Storms End. Robert dies and Stannis feels his time is finally here because of Joffrey and Tommen being born of incest, and everyone backs Renly instead.

Stannis has always been outcasted and put aside his entire life. I think this is why he believes Melisandre's tricks are real and that he actually is AA reborn, she's telling him he's destined to be a King and is important and he wants nothing more to believe he is important. He just wants the Throne IMO for the glory of being recognized finally instead of a nobody caring about him and being overlooked.

But to answer the OP, no i dont think he steps aside. he truly believes he is AA reborn and he wouldnt believe Aegon is really who he says he is

You sure you aren't Viserys' lawyer?

The Targs lost the throne for a justifiable reason. To continue my watch analogy, Dany and Aegon's situation is like Person A confiscating my watch because I did bad things, then me trying to steal it back from Person A.

LOL well said, but yeah Robert doesn't have a claim through family. Maybe that's what they used to tell people how he is still "part" Targaryen, but he got the Iron Throne but taking it himself, not because he may have a tad bit of Targaryen in him
