Dr. Pepper
^ This. It's your imagination do whatever you want with it as long as you understand its not the same as reality. One of the best aspects of the success of 50 Shades is that it's getting more women interested in porn, which will lead to better porn being created. Unlikely. Women have been reading fantasy, romance, erotica for a long time. It hasn't led to a wealth of well-written and well-acted porn.
Martini Sigil
I'm a Sociologist, secular relationship educator and author ... although S&M isn't my particular area of expertise.... those who I do know in that lifestyle are not very complimentary of 50SoG .... Nor was I (from an emotional health perspective) when I read it.
Disturber of Peace
I am of the belief that music videos will be the ones who make the biggest push for porn to be publicly acceptable at one point. But they could just fall under the "this is art because there is also a famous singer singing here" view for a long time.
Ser Pounce FTW
It involves stalking, and masochism. While there is a fairy tale ending, I feel if a relationship like this were real, it could turn quite abusive and controlling. Why is it so successful? I'd say for the exact same reason Twilight was so popular. It is the same story right down to the stalking, control and trust/self esteem issues but this version has the sex that so many complained was missing from Meyers' books. Glaurung
Unlikely. Women have been reading fantasy, romance, erotica for a long time. It hasn't led to a wealth of well-written and well-acted porn. There is a lot more female friendly porn now than there was even 5 years ago. As porn goes more amateur, there is more and more being geared towards women. Women have been reading these books for a long time, but they're just recently going mainstream and being more widely accepted. More and more women are watching porn as well. 15 years ago the women I dated rarely watched porn and usually did not want me watching it either. It's gross, it's just wrong!! I'm married now, but my wife enjoys porn and we watch together. 6 or so years ago when I was dating, most of the ladies I dated watched porn to some degree or at the very least didn't mind that I might watch it. Most of my friends who are dating are seeing the same thing. There are still a lot of women who are too ashamed that they might be into porn and inhibit themselves, but I think it's definitely improving. Seaworth'sShipmate
The fact that this series was as successful as it was, proves feminism hasn't done its job, or changed as many minds as it would like to. It seems true that after decades of female empowerment there is a (still?) somewhat large subsection of the female population that is turned on by the idea of a wealthy, powerful, somewhat older ( but still quite handsome) man, taking control of them and their lives, and showing them who is in charge around here! How else does one explain the popularity of this series? It really is like "Jane Eyre" or "Beauty and the Beast" on crack cocaine!
Dr. Pepper
Yes, because feminism is all about making sure women act and think in only one particular way.
Seaworth'sShipmate
Yes, because feminism is all about making sure women act and think in only one particular way. Just ask the die-hards, who think women who want to be stay at home mothers or who are "pro-life" , or who don't believe marriage is "institutionalized rape" are traitors to the cause lol jk, I basically agree with you though, Doctor Pepper! Red Hermit
Fantasies about being powerless are popular for both sexes. Being free from having to make decisions can be appealing.
Seaworth'sShipmate
It is difficult to believe the number of "helpless white woman" in Oriental harem erotic fictions. I can't believe that is even a kink. S
Lord Davos Baratheon
Never actually read it.A friend of mine told me that it's shite. Not really looking forward to reading it.
Glaurung
Fantasies about being powerless are popular for both sexes. Being free from having to make decisions can be appealing. I think that it is also more appealing to women because women are placed in a situation where they are inhibited sexually. If they just jump in bed with any man they are slut shamed. They are supposed to resist temptation and remain pure(though they can also be labeled as prudes if they go too far in this direction). Having a powerful man approach it in an aggressive manner takes the guessing game out of it and allows them to be free to simply enjoy the moment. I do also think that females are both socially and biologically programmed to find powerful males attractive. That "power" can manifest itself in many ways. Theda Baratheon
It isn't the porn part of it that's so bad. It's the emotional abuse, the fact he fuckin stalks her, finds out her bank account details, repeatedly pushes her boundaries way too far so she cries and feels like shit only to go back to him. It's just not good. THAT is what's problematic. I don't care about BDSM but i have noticed a LOT of people into that stuff condemn fifty shades bcus it does show an abusive relationship. Glaurung
I haven't read the books so I don't know what kinds of things went on outside of their sexual relationship. If he was stalking her and finding out here bank account details, that kind of stuff is definitely not ok.
Theda Baratheon
He also does beat the shit outta her at one point. She wants to 'take as much as she can' *for* him and then is in so much pain at one point she runs away thinking she hates him at that moment only to declare she loves him a few pages after...fuckin stupid shite. cdawnb
I'm going to echo what Theda said . It isn't the sex that's the problem. Not only is the relationship abusive, it reinforces the idea that if you love someone enough, they will stop being abusive. It's a horrible message to send to someone in an abusive relationship. Or to anyone really.

Glaurung
I'm just glad they are finally showing realistic sex in movies. Not really.... They toned it down I heard, so they could get the R rating. I know my wife and her friends were upset and wanted something a bit more raunchy. Also another major complaint was that no penises were shown.
