*Spoilers All* THEORY: Who was burned?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure why everyone thinks this is so crackpot. I actually had the same thought for the following reasons.

- Stannis' army is desperate (no food, freezing cold, blizzard, etc...)

- Stannis' army is full of religious fanatics

- An apparent "sacrifice" by their leader of his only heir and daughter who he openly loves so much would inspire his men beyond belief.

While I do find it unlikely based on the other trends of the show, I can definitely see a scenario where Stannis (a military genius) put on a show of sacrificing his "daughter" in order to inspire his troops when in reality the girl who burned was just a common girl under a glamour by Mel. (Note: I don't think burning another girl makes it any less awful)

Under this theory everyone wins (except for the girl that actually burned, including the book readers as it would be D&D throwing us a bone after they cut out the Mance plot line.

TL;DR: Is it a far-fetched theory? Absolutely. Is it totally crackpot? Absolutely not.

There is not much evidence in the show that Stannis' army is full of religious fanatics (unlike the books). They appear to be following Stannis out of love, devotion, and habit. And they looked, to me, to be pretty disturbed at the burning of Shireen, which I think is pregnant with meaning: it means his men may abandon him if the war turns against Stannis. They don't want to die for a monster.

The issue is not inspiring his men. The issue is feeding them and not dying of exposure in the frost. Burning Shireen is somehow supposed to fix those issues, not make his men magically happier so they somehow become impervious to frost and starvation. There is also not much of any evidence that his men need inspiring: the Stormcrows broke their contract and fled, but everyone else has stayed put. They're following him, again, out of love and devotion. They could've repented after Blackwater, but they kept following him. They followed him into the North. They're plenty inspired.

There is also no evidence (in the show) that Mel is capable of glamming people. It hasn't happened before at least. It would be a massive deus ex machina to save a relatively minor character for no apparent reason and to no apparent benefit.

You raise a lot of valid points. I selected the quote above because I'm not entirely sure we need evidence other than she's magic. I could be wrong because it's been a while since I read the book, but I don't recall any foreshadowing before Mance was glammed.

I would be surprised if it turns out to not have been Shireen, but I wouldn't say it's beyond the realm of possibility.

Well I was surprised Stannis did this at all so I guess I wouldn't be TOO surprised. It'd be incredibly stupid as a storytelling move: incredible (literally, not credible) and pointless (Shireen's nice but unimportant).

Ramsay.

1. Mel see him in the flames.

2. She intercepts Ramsay and easily deal with his puny 20 men

3. As Ramsay has old dreadkings blood she decide to sacrifice him. But she still wants to make a point to Stannis he should have accepted to sacrifice Shireen.

5. She burns the camp with fire magic.

6. She glamor Ramsay into Shireen and vice versa.

7. Stan is convinced to sacrifice Ramsayreen.

8. In next episode Sansa relationship take a new turn as she is now married with Shireensay and her torment become being forced to follow an english course.

This is why I keep scrolling in these forums.

Most likely it was Shireen but since the show is its own monster, I would not be surprised if there is a twist to this storyline somewhere down the road.

The Night King stabs Stannis through the heart.

As he is dying, he sees a figure watching him, a small burnt girl with bright blue eyes.

Princess Shireen, the Song of Ice and Fire.

That's how the series now ends in my mind, and don't let anyone tell you different. It is known.

I was actually thinking myself "She's not dead until I see the body." Unless someone specifically says she's dead on the show, or I see a body, I'm not counting her out yet. No-one doubted Selmy was dead because we saw his body. And Shireen's screams did seem to be cut abruptly short, maybe because it would be too unbearable to watch, but maybe because she gets a last minute save (from Davos?). Likelihood is she is dead though
