CNN is reporting that when Cruz went backstage someone was so pissed that they had to be restrained. And PBS noted that Mrs.Cruz was escorted out of the stadium as the crowd started to get angry. Pence speaking. Finally, someone cracks a self-deprecating, non-vitriolic joke. Gotta give him that. And notice that several of these Republicans, and Pence just did it, spoke of admiring JFK in their youth. I guess they really think they can bring over some Sanders supporters. She's not entertaining or particularly engaging. She's not an effective storyteller. She's not funny or charming or very relatable. I'll go out of my way to listen to an Obama interview for instance. Earlier this week I listened to the Marc Maron WTF podcast that featured Obama. It was nothing earth-shattering, but it was entertaining. The man was funny, responsive, open, and ultimately interesting for the better part of an hour. She simply doesn't have the same gift for communication that some folks do. It's not something she needs to be pilloried for, it's just the simple truth. She's not someone that I'm going to go out of my way to listen to. She's just kind of boring. Fragile Bird
I keep hearing a phrase used over and over at this convention, about giving Americans choice over how they educate their children. Is this code language for, 'We will dismantle the public school system and hand out vouchers for you to use at whatever crappy private schools get set up'? Yes, because the Republican dream is to privatize every public good in America.

DanteGabriel
I can't. This election has blown out my outrage sphincters. What is there to say about this shameless shitshow of uniformly awful people and the relentlessly vile muppet they have dug out of the bottom of the barrel of the Reagan coalition of racism, false piety, chickenhawkery, and moneymongering? Trump is the distillation of every fearful, vicious, and greedy impulse that right wing demagogues have sold us for the last couple of generations. I am sad for this country in a way I never thought I'd be. I used to always say I wasn't cynical -- I was a disappointed idealist. Fuck it, this election has turned me cynical. We are a doomed nation of spoiled children. A collection of frogs in the pan of water, turning the heat up on ourselves because it is either entertaining or profitable to do so. Fuck us, that we would allow this to happen.

It appears I'm starting to underestimate the power of sexism. This sucks. This is what I was saying back when that piece came out which challenged the "Clinton = more electable" line, saying in a normal election it would be true, but Bernie would be better against Trump. I underestimated this effect here and was utterly shocked at the quantity and vitriol of the misogyny that came out of the woodwork and in the unashamed open over 3 years of having a woman as our PM. 41 minutes ago, Manhole Eunuchsbane said: I'll go out of my way to listen to an Obama interview for instance. This is hardly a comparison against the average though, Obama is utterly stand out at this kind of thing, he's both a great speaker but also very personable and conveys a sense of being personally in conversation with him when doing interviews etc. Compare Clinton to Romney or Kerry and she'd be ranked much more charismatic but for sexism IMO (I certainly rank her as such), and I'd say she's on par with other average candidates on this (as admittedly those two are below average). Oh yeah, absolutely. Obama is like in the top 5% at this sort of thing. I would put Hillary in the same category as a Romney or a Kerry. Just not that engaging. Average is a good word. illinifan
I would never vote for Ted Cruz but I respect him as a villain in contrast with Trump. And as a sidenote, I have to say that I love all the GOT references that people were making on the Twitters. That was the highlight to me.

Have you seen the average Senator giving a speech on TV? I saw Kerry speak in person once. He was actually pretty engaging. A camera makes everyone 50% more boring. I agree Obama is in the top 5%- of all time- right up there with Churchill, Hitler, MLK, and Cicero.

Romney is slick when it comes to the scripted stuff, but I think he fails pretty miserably when it comes to off the cuff stuff. I'd say he and Hillary are somewhat similar in that aspect. I honestly can't remember a Kerry speech, but I know I've heard a few. That pretty much tells me all I need to know. He just doesn't hold my attention. Good point regarding the speaking abilities of your average politician. I guess that sort of resets the average button a bit.
