Conversely, Pat Hughes called the same play perfectly on the radio (Hughes is a former umpire) as it happened. Just a perfect example of the difference between being a homer and being good at it. Honestly, i want my announcer rooting for the team in a noticable, yet subtle way.
This is Jon Miller to a tee. During the week, with San Francisco. He's really great here, and it saddens me that the rest of baseball (outside of the great city of Baltimore, where he got his start in MLB broadcasting) only knows him from SNB. And thank all that is holy, that he doesn't bring Joe Moron back with him.

edit: missing "is"

Every time I catch SNB (thankfully rare, as I work Sunday nights) it's surprising. I can't tell if it's he doesn't care as much, the national coverage seems more stifling to him as far as letting his sense of humor out, or Joe Morgan is just so suck that he sucks the life out of him. Probably a little of all three.

I hate both Morgan and Miller. Morgan more. But I hate Miller for the little "play stupid" act he always puts on in order to allow Morgan to explain, in detail, something that is blatantly obvious.

And I hate even more that both of them allow their idiotic conversations to get in the way of actually calling the game.

Hey now. I would be remiss in living up to my custom title on this board if I did not correct you - over here in Baltimore, we knew Jon Miller's excellence first until Peter Angelos, douche that he is, ran him out of town.

To this day, even though he's been gone for a long time, it's Jon Miller's voice crackling over a radio that personifies baseball for me.

Honestly, what do you think he should do? Call him out on the air?

The people in charge know everything we do, and the ratings don't suffer regardless, therefore they don't care.

Edit: Mack, fixed that for you.

Yea. Being at odds with morgan on air would make it far worse then as it is. You pretty much have to go along with him. Let him tell his stupid stories, let him obsess over a guy leading off, let him never give any credit whatsoever to any secondbasemen other then himself, etc..

The ridiculous overpronunciation of hispanic names makes miller a little annoying, though, and i assume that carries over to his SFG broadcast.

It does, though I've never considered it overpronunciation. Mostly because I don't know better. I just assumed it was more correct than other white guys I might listen to. :dunno:

And all of my hispanic co-workers are off tonight. Damn. I'll ask around.

I suppose some of them are technically correct, but there are established ways to say Ramirez properly as an english speaker while not sounding like you are impersonating Zorro.

ETA: Do you find it slightly odd that an entire ethnicity is off at your workplace?

Nope. I'm on the swing shift and manning is relatively low. (less than ten, normally)

I don't want him to call Morgan out, I just wish he wouldn't fabricate openings for Morgan to step into. If that makes any sense. Miller often says stuff like "Now, why doesn't he [insert stupid question here]" for no other reason than to allow Morgan to explain something that everybody already knows.

I lived in Mexico for nearly 10 years, so I feel confident in saying that Miller way over-pronounces hispanic names. He's almost as bad as Alex Trebek.

I just kinda assumed that non-White Sox fans don't watch their games...why do you subject yourselves? It's not like, in this day of cable and satellite TV, there are no other games to watch if you need a baseball fix. Are you actually so consumed by your own hatred that you watch to receive gratification from the Sox's failures?

Excepting the three games of the crosstown series Hawk and DJ do, there's no reason you have to listen to them. I ask this because, as their target audience is White Sox fans, and that target audience seems to enjoy their broadcasts--they're two fans, cheering for the Sox right along with their audience, getting pumped by the team's successes and depressed by their failures--what difference does it make?

Sure, Sox fans are a bit looney if they think they compare favorably in absolute terms to many other broadcasting teams out there in terms of pure game-calling quality--in other words, they should never be asked to do a nationally broadcast game--but the vitriol directed toward Hawk and DJ by non-Sox fans is a bit perplexing to me (aside from the fact that they're well known because of Hawk's home run call). In Chicago alone Tom Dore and Johnny Kerr suffered much less public criticism than Hawk and DJ do for the Bulls broadcasts (though the Bulls bulldozed their broadcast teams recently), and they were arguably on the same level of ridiculous commentary and blatant homerism.

And there's worse out there in other cities--ever listened to a Yankee radio broadcast?

Yes he should. For those of you who don't read the comedic gold that Fire Joe Morgan is.

It is definitely over pronunciation. My girlfriend is hispanic and agrees. Well, not even overpornunciation sometimes, just wrong.

You all know I'm a Cards fan and generally wish misfortune on the Cubs, usually through fielding errors and blaming goats/cats/dweebish fans for what goes wrong, but I hate seeing a player get hurt like Soriano got hurt last night. I only saw one quick take of it, but it looked like he was protecting his face as he took that pitch off his wrist.

That was not fun to watch. They still won and continue the hot streak.

I'm impressed that the Redbirds are still hanging tough at 2.5 games back, though losing Pujols for three weeks with a calf injury is not going to be easy to handle. How long can Ryan Ludwick (who??) continue to be the slugger for this team?

As for broadcast guys, the Farmer/Stone team may have knowledge out the wazoo, but you could slice the tension in that booth with a knife. They need a play-by-play guy in the booth. And Hawk/DJ? Nothing's more fun than listening to Hawk rant like a man possessed over nothing important at all.

Pat Hughes is the business. I can listen to a Cub broadcast and even when Santo goes off into a description of Never Neverland and they miss calling a pitch or two, I never feel out of the game when Hughes gently wrests the broadcast back on track. He's just got that 'sound of summer' voice that makes baseball on the radio one of life's joys.

Hahaha, exactly!

But yeah, I feel bad for any player hurt like Soriano, it's always a shame to see a good player go down...but also because now if they tank it, they have yet ANOTHER excuse. That's what drives me most nuts about the Cubs fans, their unending quest for a scapeGOAT year in and year out.

I do love Hawk and DJ (although DJ substantially less so) because of their enthusiasm when it comes to the Sox....they aren't articulate, terribly insightful or anything of the sort, but by golly they LOVE this team and it shows. By contrast, I love watching Joe Buck do telecasts because of his usually unbiased commentary, knowledge of the game and his dry wit.

I have to admit to a very biased and unwarranted love for Steve Lyons but I think he's done with broadcasting, yeah?

Does ANYONE find Joe Morgan anything but a doofus?

Working with McCarver will make anyone seem normal, but Buck has become Fox-Obnoxious.

He's an incredible talent, even from the time his dad and Mike Shannon left Joe alone in the booth for a whole inning with a live mic and a game going on when he was 16 (I think?), but I think the fame and 'Fox Attitude' have spoiled him to an extent.

They talk too much and don't seem to let the broadcast breathe. Then again, all the Gox graphics, plugs for Wanda Sykes or Bernie Mac shows, and NASCAR plugging just gets downright annoying, anyway.

Ahh, for the days of NBC's Saturday Game of the Week with Scully and Garagiola. Those were always fun.

Nah. It's still baseball. And as a baseball fan, sometimes it's all you got. Can't hurt for an inning or two to see what's going on across town. I hate the Sox, but that doesn't mean, as a baseball fan, I'm going to tune them out completely. I want to know what's happening in baseball. Same reason I listen to Brewers games on the radio sometimes. Sunday afternoon drives to work are great because I usually can switch between Milwaukee and the Sox during breaks to the Cubs games. :P

Hey! Who are your teams all stars?

Cubs should see:

Soriano, Fukudome and Soto in the starting line up (though Soriano probably won't play).

Lee, Ramierez, Zambrano and Dempster should be named to the team (either one could actually start).

Theriot, DeRosa, Marmol and Wood are all dark horses who should be there (Hell, DeRosa is polling number 2 in the fan voting. Damn you Chase Utley, best player in baseball!).

Now that's all my opinion, but when was the last time the Cubs had some many worthies? Hands down the best Cubs team in forever.
