Looks like I have us a place for the sat night festivities although I'm waiting to find out if it's a seperate room or a reserved area in the main bar (I suspect it's the reserved area).

Here's a linky - Masons Arms

Teh interweb talk has it as a very good pub with fantastic food, plus it's only 7 mins walk from the city centre.
Looks good Sean :D You are the magic man!

And it's in staggering distance of the river which runs past the hostel so provided anyone staying there staggers in the right direction we shouldn't get lost! (I'm trying to ignore the fact that staggering alongside a river could prove foolhardy :P)
And I want to go see platform 9 3/4 ;)
There's quite a bit of refurbishment work going on at Kings Cross at the moment, so I'm not sure if you'll actually be able to get to the bit with the Platform 9 3/4 sign and the fake trolley 'embedded' in the wall.

Awww :(

Could people living in or around London tell me if it is reasonably possible to get from Kings Cross to London City Airport (in the docklands) in under 1 hour in late afternoon on a Monday?

Yeah, the most straightforward way is closed at the moment...I'll have to see how long it takes me on the way there. Or try to get a new train ticket in York.

*curses self for not thinking about this earlier* :(

Sorry, I meant to say that - avoid Bank atm if possible. Tubes do go through there but you can't change from certain lines there so best to just NOT get off there if you can go another way.

You can get on the northern line to TCR and then get on the central line to Stratford then get on the DLR to the airport. That's what I'd do, I think.

What does TCR stand for?

The DLR webpage recommends taking the black line to London Bridge, then the grey line to Canning Town, and the DLR from there.
(Just fyi if other people are going into the same direction)

They say it should take around 40 minutes, which would be ok.

Isis, I had a dream about your avatar once... :o

Sorry, had to do a bit of actual work for a bit there. Bit scary when that happens. :) Yep, definitely more than one way to skin a cat/get from KC to City airport.

What this avatar?
<-----

It has an alternative form, might switch it over later on...

Yeah that avatar...It wasn't doing much, just about a foot across and sitting in a shop window ;)

I hate it too when work intrudes on my surfing/ Facebooking activities...

The back of the pub actually opens out onto the river, so if it's nice weather, the beer garden could be really nice.

Alytha - While it's possible, I really think you realistically would need more time to do that journey than 1 hour.

I considered this. Researched plain and train tickets.
But concluded it would be to expensive and stressfull (look at Alytha).
And I don´t know people from the board that well.
Hope you all have a great time :grouphug:

York sounds great. Would have loved to go.
But perhaps we should consider a city with an airport the next time.

Hah. :P

In fairness though, there is a very regular train service from Manchester airport itself (which is a big airport) to York which takes 1hr 45 mins (roughly). If you went to a big city like London, you could spend almost as long getting somewhere in the city from one of its airports.

Actually, it's not all that bad. London City Airport specialises on business people ( I always call it the penguin habitat, because of all the suits. No offense to any suited boarders regularily using it :P), so they allow checking in until 30 minutes before daparture, and many people don't have check-in luggage, so queues are short.
And so far, planes have been late every single time there. (which has saved my butt at least once already)

Ah, fair enough then. That should allow plenty time. :)

I think London City might even be my favourite airport (if there is such a thing!) as it's so small and efficient.

Excellent - well done Sean.

(And it's only 6 mins walk from the Riverside flat where a ton of us are staying, so that's neat too!)

ETA:

OMG google maps is... so good... *swoons*

Directions from Riverside flat to pub
