Well, so much for that. Early reports confirm that Gayle will be re-appointed captain.

That's a pity. I guess the selectors felt like Ganga's had his chances (40-odd Tests averaging 25). But although conventional wisdom says that a youngster averaging 25 is better than a veteran who averages 25 because he has more potential and room for improvement - I still thought there'd be a place for Ganga. He'd do just as adequate a job as any of the other Windies second-string batsmen, and his temperament with batting is actually fairly good.

Yeah, I agree with that Jeor. Ganga has a much higher chance of grinding out a hundred at the top of the order than Devon Smith or Runako Morton.

BTW, is it just me or is there WAY too much ODI cricket going on at the moment. For a game that is in decline they sure are playing a heck of a lot of it. I would much rather be watching India v Australia and Pakistan vs NZ test series right now than 50-over series of interminable length.

Also, rumours that Duncan Fletcher has his eyes on the NZ job. Interesting. Not sure how that would go.

I enjoyed this take on England's forthcoming tour of South Africa.

ENGLAND cricket captain Andrew Strauss arrived in South Africa yesterday insisting he was 'absolutely raring' to have his arse handed to him on a plate.

As his team flew into Johannesburg, Strauss said he was confident the upcoming tour against the world's top ranked team would be an 'unremitting cavalcade of horror' and urged England fans back in the UK to read a book or go for a good long walk...

A spokesman for Amnesty International said: "We thought we'd seen the last of heavy-set Boers in matching uniforms physically abusing others for their own thuggish amusement. But it does look like this England tour is going to be the cricketing equivalent of an unprovoked baton charge."

Strauss admitted: "We are probably going to emerge from this tour looking like a we've just fallen down some stairs at a police station. Hopefully The Special AKA will write a song about us."

For most of his coaching career, Fletcher was content to sit in the shadows and let his players and captain (Hussain) get the glory. Unfortunately with all these biographies the cat is out of the bag and he is now a 'celebrity' coach who has become a dominant personality. I'm not sure this would work with NZ, where Vettori basically has complete control over NZ cricket and Fletcher would have to take the back seat. Vettori and co. would be better served working with a lower profile technical coach, like Steve Rixon. From the sounds of the way their last coach left, the senior NZ players are looking for a guy who can run structured training sessions and do detailed analysis, not a coach supremo who wants to call all the shots.

Awesome innings from Tendulkar. I have previously been an advocate of him quitting ODIs to focus on Test cricket...but watching him unleash like that in front of a massive crowd was absolutely breathtaking.

And as much as I hate to say it, Australia deserve some credit for getting a lead in this series. With the depleted squad they have, there is no way they should be winning against an Indian team of that quality on their home turf. Also, congrats to Shaun Marsh for breaking through with a big score.

ETA: Fantastic century for McCullum against Pakistan. That should lay to rest any thoughts of him being dropped down the order.

A question for Rimmer: what exactly do you think the NZ selectors see in this Broom character? Frankly, he looks way out of his depth at this level. I honestly cannot work out for the life of me why they won't give Papps/How/Fulton a shot in the middle order.

No idea at all, I've been wondering that for months now. I think he must just be a placeholder for Grant Elliot at the moment, but I've never seen a specialist batsman be given so many chances and do so little. I think he's supposed to be good at coming in and turning the strike rate over straight away, but it's just not working at all. I'd rather have James Franklin there for the next game.

They see a great pun...sportswriters and commentators probably pay a fee to the NZ cricket board just to keep him in the team. :P

To have a specialist batsman continually come in lower down is a bit of a waste. It reminds me of a triangular series in Australia years ago, before Mahela Jayawardene had established himself as a big batsman. But for multiple matches he was coming in down at No.7 (due to Kaluwitharana the keeper opening the batting) or even No.8 if a quicker-scoring all-rounder was sent in ahead of him.

Exciting finish to the Pakistan v NZ ODI series. Pakistan were deep in the mire at 9-101 chasing 200-odd, before a 103-run partnership for the final wicket got them within 8 runs of victory. Lucky escape for Vettori's men really.

Shame there is no test series to round off the tour :tantrum:

There is :P Two-test series in NZ. Sort of the second half of the original tour, which was meant to be in Pakistan.

Ah. I stand corrected. :dunce: Er...well done ICC.

Two tests really isn't enough though - especially in NZ where chances are at least one of those games will be rain-affected.

I'm looking forward to them though. Pakistan and NZ are pretty even teams, both very talented and very inconsistent - Pakistan slightly more talented, NZ slightly more consistent. It'll be interesting. I'm guessing that one of the tests will be drawn or rained off, and the other, who knows. We never get to play Pakistan, our batsmen usually get bamboozled by bowlers they haven't faced before, and Pakistan has always been our bogey team... but we've had the better of them in the Champions Tropy and in this series so far, so who knows what will happen.

And only Pakistan could ever finish a one-dayer with the numbers ten and eleven top-scoring :) Has that ever happened before?

Anybody else following India v Sri Lanka?

What a first day thus far. From 4/32 to 5/380. and wow, dravid has a strike rate greater than 70! What a ton, first morning he hit a six as well! the wall is becoming something entirely different.

and congrats to him for passing border, and being 5th highest run scorer of all time.

Yuvraj played well actually, and so did Dhoni, for his 2nd hundred.

Oh and as I'm writing this, Dhoni is out! right near the end of play, shame.

Edit: and now he's crossed 11,000 runs! Good on him.

lol he totally upstaged tendulkar and his 20 years.

Edit 2: Sorry not border! Steve Waugh, dravid passed waugh for fifth highest.

Yeah, I'm following the text commentary on Cricinfo. Good to see Dravid back to his best.

The Sri Lankans will be annoyed that they let India off the hook though. Really, 4-32 on the first morning is great stuff against a quality Indian line-up.
