Dragon Age: Origins: Thread III [some SPOILERS]

And that's fairly disappointing about specialisations. Bloodmages are described everywhere as being outcasts and whatnot, so I would've expected to be treated differently if I played as one

How would someone know just to look at you that you are a Blood Mage unless you started cutting yourself and casting magics? Same goes for Assassins; I don't think an assassin would be much good if he had a sign on his forehead that said "I'm an assassin." They'll just think you are a warrior of some sort.

Regarding specializations, some could be easily missed. The Arcane Warrior one is found in the werewolf quest, but if you don't examine the right tiny object, you'll miss the opportunity. I now use the TAB key everywhere to make sure I don't miss objects or things I can manipulate.

Becoming an Arcane Warrior certainly opens up possibilities for your mages in terms of armor because your Magic score takes the place of Strength to determine what armors you can use. Of course, few armors give the kinds of magic bonuses that man mage items do, so you'll lose out on the bonues to Magic and Spellpower that a lot of those offer, but the added protection might make up for that. Since I have two mages in my party (my PC and Morrigan, or sometimes Wynn), it just means I can concentrate those items on the one and the other, my PC, becomes more combat oriented.

The worst specialization unlocks are the ones achieved through buying books. Not that talking to an NPC and getting them to agree to teach you all you need to know on the subject in five minutes is much better, but at least they don't charge you 15 gold pieces for that.;)

Though the sub-quest to unlock the Reaver specialisation takes the cake, it just makes no sense whatsoever and is just there to offer you an option to act evil in a rather random manner.

Wait. I thought the books were a cop-out. A way around if you couldn't figure out how to unlock something. That's crappy that there are some (like Ranger, which I've wanted for Leliana for my last two playthroughs) that you just flat out have to buy. How stupid! It would be easy enough, in this case, to make a Dalish character the Ranger master...

Yeah, and Wynne could teach Spirit Healer. And of course there is no book for Reaver, so if you really want it you have to do that stupid quest...

Only once, and if you save before doing it and reload immediately after unlocking Reaver you'll have it forever on. Then just do the quest how you would want to.

I know. It’s still a stupid quest.:P

I think the quest is useful for those of us who want to screw the Chantry over. Not to mention you get double loot! Kill the spirit, then kill the cultists. Screw everyone over, because obviously you are a far better messiah figure than this Andastre character.

Just finished my first playthrough, male human noble warrior. Now I'm doing female city elf rogue, and I have to say it's a lot of fun. After being the tank for so long, I'm enjoying the hell out of being the more tactical backstabbing rogue. Only thing I'm having trouble with is the different stats a rogue needs -- with a tank, I could more or less just stack Strength, but with a rogue I need dex and cunning and strength (to swing the big damage longswords).

Doing the Circle of Magi quest first REALLY helps with this, as all the Fonts of Willpower and Essences of Strength you find in the fade buff your stats quite nicely. If you get them all, you win something like 15 stat points over all!

I'm with Odie - 'Free Love' sounds cute, but I'd feel...weird doing that to Alistair.

I'm sure that others will use it to explore his clumsy/adorable courtship antics, there is nothing wrong with more Alistair love!

Oh and for a fyi, each character has two special gifts, like Alisters mothers locket, or for Morrigan its her mothers book and a mirror.

I found a fabulous gift chart on the bottom of the Dragon Age Wiki page. I found that if I leave the web page up it chokes my game a little because of the FLASH graphics (which is odd considering my machine setup), so I just copied it over to an excel sheet and keep that up on my second monitor for reference.

A full set of Dalish armour (for the set bonus) is pretty good mid-level light armour. I think the only ones that are really above it are the superior drakeskin and superior dragonskin armours (for which you first have to kill some drakes/dragons and then pay the armoursmith in Denerim extra money).

ETA: Said armoursmith also sells light armour of higher tiers, might be worth a look (set boni work across tiers btw).

I picked up this and love it:

Shadow of the Empire

Requires: 20 strength

9.00 2.30%

+2 strength

+2 dexterity

+2 stamina regeneration in combat

Purchased from Legnar in Orzammar Commons for 20g 85s

With my rogue, money is not nearly the issue it is with my mage - so 20g wasn't that painful for long.

Is that where it is? I picked up the spellsword, but couldn't find the AW skill to make it usable. I'll have to go back or hit it on the next run through.

(Playthrough #2)

I'm loving having maxxed Ranger skill! I went into the Proving a little concerned, but popping a giant spider out takes the shine off of your opponents for sure.

Went to Denerim for the Landsmeet and told Howe off to his face - felt good...will feel even better later...

With my rogue, I basically stacked dex, and then cunning, and then every couple levels tossed a point or two into strength (more if I'd just picked up some phat lewt and needed to be slightly stronger to use it).

Though yeah, the circle tower helps.

Thanks for the tip on that armour, I'm definitely going to check that out once I swing by Orzammar (I'm in the Circle Tower now, going to hit up Denerim first for the Duelist specialisation, then make my way to Orzammar). It's not as though money is an issue for me, since I'm obsessed with looting corpses. I've got somewhere between 65-70 gold right now, and that's after spending a bunch to pick up a backpack and some recipes. 20 gold is chump change :)

So, I got Alister in the Dragon armor, which is pretty good stuff (didn't get the full Juggernaut set, so I'm using this at the moment - not sure of the Juggernaut set is better, or not). Weird thing, when you have the full Dragon armor, it doesn't give you the bonus for a full set!!?? Probably a glitch or something they missed. What is the full set bonus like, anyway? Is it significant?

Another question, how necessary is it really to put money, runes, crafting components, etc. into the boxes in your camp for your allies? Does it have much of an affect on the endgame? I've been popping novice runes in there for now and I dropped maybe a gold in at some point, but for now I think it's more important if I use the gold myself.

I finished my first playthrough yesterday as a female city elf archer. It was great fun so I'm already well into my next playthrough. I'm a male human noble tank this time. I love this game - I just can't stop playing it! So many different things to do, people to kill. I'm going to be a right bastard this time and kill as many people as possible. I already killed the dying soldier in the Korcari Wilds and the deserter in Ostagar. I love being a baddie. Alistair already hates me.
