Anyway to distract me from my whinging, how is everyone else tonight?

Craving a pie and sauce after reading the pie thread.

And trying to stay cool - been a a hot and humid day here.

What's with the roman numeral fixation with the subtitles of these threads? Shouldn't all Aussie thread just be XXXX anyway?

Thought I'd drop by and offer my sympathies for the rather harrowing time you've had lately.

Odd thing, cyclone Yasi had the effect of causing a town over here to have it's hottest day ever (which is not that hot by your standards at just over 40 Deg). No rain came with it of course, because in the South Island if it rains it means cooler weather, unlike in the tropics where it often makes no difference.

Anyway I hope the rest of the summer goes well for y'all.

Nice comeback in the ODI's BTW.

I hate to hear the bad news from back in Perth, but I'm just glad less people live in the outer bush suburbs over there as opposed to Sydney.

I miss not eating pies much since I'm eating the paleo lifestyle diet.

I've got one of those sunbeam 4 pie maker things and it's awesome let me tell you, add your leftover mince to it. I still want to make one with some kind of guniness or dark ale added to the beef.

Brook,

If you decide to be irresponsible, trust me, red wine is far more socially acceptable for mothers to get tipsy on while looking after the kids.

Anyone watch that Underbelly thing the other night? I'm waiting for the 'Razor' one about Darlinghurst in the 20s. I read in the news last week how Des Moran was shot dead by a guy in a Dicknie Knee mask, how I wish channel 9 would dramatise that.

yeah I drank all the wine, and a good portion of the vodka, the other night (when I didn't have sole care of the kids before someone calls DOCS on me :P )

The good news is I'm now certain its not chicken pox, the rash is actually improving so I guess it was viral or something, typically he gets it covering his two pre-school days so I have to keep him home but I'm happy enough I'm not in for a week of hell.

I never got into the underbelly series but underbelly Razor does look interesting.

And you lot call yourself Aussies!

Not a mention of the classic Aussie dish of a Pie Floata!

Guess what I am having for tea as soon as it is cool enough weatherwise :)

So what do people think of the mad monk's gaff in Afghanistan?

Personally I think it really showed that he is just not a leader and doesn't think like a leader. A leader would have said "ok it was stuffed up on that day so how can we make sure it doesn't happen again."

It was more his reaction to his being questioned on it that confirmed for me that he is not in any way shape or form a leader.

After all the media is just as likely to cut out something positive he may have said.

I find it hard to get worked up about the comment itself - its pretty clear what he meant.

But yeah his reaction hasn't been too bright, but thats Tony for you.

Was his silence deliberate to spite the journo or was he so infuriated at the insinuation?

Personally I think it's something that's backfired on the channel 7 journo. He can say that he gave Abbots office 2.5 hours notice, but at the end of the day it's not a clever thing to do.

BTW yeah I voted for him. Don't like him alot though.

It was a complete beat-up, Channel 7 have really scraped the bottom.

Abbott's reaction however has made him the story - he really looked for all money like he was about to deck Riles when he should have just dissed him and left it at that. It raises more doubts about his ability to handle himself and gives ammo to those in the party who think he's their Latham.

It's disappointing that this is the story that's emerged out of Abbott's trip to Afghanistan when he did much more questionable things than bloke it up in convo with some officers. For one, the reason that conversation was even taped was because he'd gone to Afghanistan having claimed that Lance Corporal McKinney's death was preventable, calling for more troops, airpower and tanks. The Army disabused him of that and put on a full firepower demonstration to hammer home the point.

Even more worrying were the serious overtures he made in an effort to go out on patrol. That he'd actually think that was an idea worth pushing is utterly staggering and should have done more to undermine his credibility than this non-story. The guy is just not right in the head and however much he thinks he cares and supports the ADF the fact that he wanted to go out on patrol screams that he doesn't have the maturity and full respect for the job the defence forces do.

In his defence I'll say, he thought he was supporting them by calling for more hardware and they proved him wrong and "shit happens" was him acknowledging that.

Yup not a good idea for him to go out on patrol. But was he meaning "patrol" or PATROL? He gets escorted around by a close protection team a bit and probably thinks he's accustomed to being in harms way where other competant people can deflect danger. It's not worthy of cruxifying him for as lots of people want to tag along with troops and don't quite understand things.

Well that is pretty delusional. Probably trying to be like Julius Caesar or something suffering with his men at the front.

He might think so but personally I think it would be a real shock for him to find out just what a real LEADER is even if it is a lance corporal :)

Like clockwork this fun, easy going thread of drunken debauchery turns back to politics.

Ok

Check out Ian Glen looking at Dany as she gets off her horse, he's already getting the dirty old man part going.

And question,

which is better or worse to live in, Darwin or Hobart? I'm asking for a transfer out of Canberra and not sure where they will send me so I thought of the two most unlucky places.

I've never been to Darwin.

Hobart was pretty cool. And by cool I mean fucking freezing. We were there in May and the mornings were like a Perth August. Aside from the cold, Hobart was a pretty cruisy town. It is smaller than Perth but it has those Eastern States opening hours that the neanderthals over here can't get used to. We went to some good pubs/cafes etc and nearly everything on the island is in range for a weekender, so there is stuff to do.
