  1. What disappoints me right now is that the season 5 soundtrack still hasn't been released. I've no idea what's going on.
  2. I recently read an article about Jackson's initial struggles with LOTR and the studios involved. He was initially contracted to work with Miramax, yep that company. He pitched a two film idea first, which the rapist was fine with, but apparently his brother wasn't, who wanted only one movie. They were going to gut a lot of stuff, including Helm's Deep and kill one of the Hobbits. Jackson really didn't want that, but he was in danger of getting sued by Miramax for the initial down payment they made. Eventually he found New Line, who not only agreed to pay Weinstein off to go away, but also suggest 3 movies is the only proper way to do it, which made Jackson ecstatic. Anyway, that's my thread derail of the day.
  3. People in this world live longer, so you wouldn't have to significantly age up the actors.
  4. From interviews I've read it seems they did know. I don't expect the protomolecule timeline to be fully wrapped, though a satisfying end with a door left open is viable.
  5. He only got a job right at the season's end so we don't know what he does. But it appears there's been a time skip.
  6. I can't wait. I am nervous about how they intend to end it, and hopeful it's not the end. December is shaping up to be a good month.
  7. Pretty much every CW I watched, which is really just Arrowverse has had a solid or decent first season, then went downhill. I hope Superman & Lois doesn't follow the pattern.
  8. Mass Effect borrowed heavily from B5, so maybe the new B5 could borrow from ME and make the Minbari more like the Asari. Have them gender fluid and able to mate with multiple humanoid races.
  9. My initial reaction: yay, reboot with JMS! Let's go! Then I saw CW. Oof Yes Superman & Lois was a step above all the other Arrowverse shows, but while its look was better, it wasn't exceptional, and its writing was everywhere between great and typical CW shlock. But then again, JMS is at the helm, and Warner Bros. might throw enough money at it to give it a nice look. In the US, the CW has its own streaming app which offers all the shows for free the next day after air. Superman & Lois streamed on HBO Max a little later. I don't know if this reboot will get the same treatment.
  10. I keep wondering how some of you can go so fast through a book. I'm enjoying it so far. I just finished Part VII
  11. Damn it, somehow I misremembered the launch date, thinking it was the 16th, and I haven't finished my re-read of TTwP. Close though. The ebook for TWotC just got delivered.
  12. There have been other shows that similar things, but this may be the first series were this extra stuff is on a dedicated youtube channel bearing the name of the evil corp. of the story.
  13. The latest from the totally fair and balanced news network.
  14. Just popping in here after reading the OP to say the Duchy of Brittany is ready to claim its independence.
  15. Finished. It was fine. As tropey as it gets, and with some actual cliche storytelling, mainly the Nina/Matthias plot, which I didn't the understand the purpose of until the neatly wrapped end.
  16. hmm, so is Ketterdam? on the western side of the Fold? The old lady who ran the orphanage implied that the Ravkans were being pressed, that they had nowhere to go. Since the map shows a sea on the western edge, that means Ravka is being pressed from the east by other nations? Not sure why they wouldn't keep the peasant thing. Why make it about nationality/race and not class? Regarding the skiff, my issue was with how it moved on the ground. Does is have rollers? Or it's like a sled? What reduces the friction with the ground so the generated wind doesn't just snap the mast or the sail? The wind is generated to come from somewhere else, the Grisha isn't pushing air into the sail like a fan, right? This is why I had to turn my brain off at that scene.
  17. I got back to Netflix, and started watching this show. Two episodes in. I'm not familiar with the source material, because I seldom read YA. It's ok so far. From what I gather, mainly from this thread, they've weaved together two book plots, I guess to add more meat to the story, and due to chronological events. The large cast of characters doesn't bother me, even if I haven't retained all the names yet. Thankfully, they didn't waste time in defining when the criminal gang storyline takes place in respect with Alina's story. I do like the gang storyline more so far. The only recognizable actors for me so far are Ben Barnes and the guy playing the merchant who hires Kaz. And I could swear I've heard Inej's voice in a few video games. The world is mildly interesting. I like the pace at which the world building is being unfolded; not too much thrown at once, but with decent explanations given at the right time. For example, in episode 2 I like when the commander of the First Army explains to Mal how the Grisha are falling behind and may be supplanted by technological advancements. This explains why the merchant Dreesan? is willing to rob the Grisha of their new found superhero. I'm still a bit uncertain about the geography. The briefly spotted maps had writing that I can't read, seeing how the world is heavily influenced by Slavic cultures. So did the Fold split the country of Ravka in two or is Ravka contained only on the western side? I assume that's where Alina is, because they keep mentioning 'West Ravka.' And the Ravkans are at war with more than one other nation? They seem to be at war with some northern nation, and with one of the Three Kingdoms from ancient China. I'm confused about the location where the First Army is camped. Just because of a direct line through the Fold with the other side, or is that where the frontline is? So Alina is racially profiled, because she is half-Shu Han, i.e. Asian, right? So in terms of the world building, given that the Ravkans are clearly inspired by Russia, Poland etc. I have to ask, how do, ahem, black people fit into it? There didn't seem to be any discrimination their way. I hope there is more explanation about how those Fold-traversing skiffs work, because I had to switch my brain off watching the physics defying transport.
  18. Less than when Hidden Figures was nominated. Great movie, not SF. At least this one has murder elves.
  19. Unwittingly, the Orcs that killed Isildur did a lot of good. Isildur would have fallen to the corruption of the Ring, and likely brought down both Arnor and Gondor in the process.
  20. I for one am excited. Amazon may revitalize the Stargate franchise, which MGM grossly mishandled.
