  1. For a couple of years when our benefits would change at work, ObamaCare was blamed by our former HR director. I would regularly correct her that it was the ACA and then dig up some minutiae point that showed that it frequently wasn’t or that they were incorrectly representing a benefit (because math). She backed off fairly quickly and started being a little more precise after getting dragged a couple of times.
  2. Things continue at the same pace. We’re getting together this weekend for a picnic and Shakespeare in the park. ‘Tis I, a mere chivalrous gentleman. I should like to be more bold but do fear that crossing may be too far gone. Thus courtly romance do I enjoy.
  3. Shooter was a big part of my comics DNA - both formative: Legion of Super Heroes and resurgent: Valiant. as much as I feel like he’s a good example for not meeting your heroes, he still had a profound impact on comics across multiple houses.
  4. Had a marvelous if still slow paced weekend. Had an event in her neck of the woods for much of the weekend so spent much of the weekend with her after my activities, including a pretty nice dinner and some amazing conversation. The walls are still up, but maybe, just maybe, the defenses are softening a bit. We are, mutually, very open about life, past relationships, thoughts in general. So many points of connection. Still committed to seeing where this goes, just a little impatience.
  5. There are worse things than snoring. I got a CPAP a couple of years ago. It's done wonders, but I woke myself up this morning. My mouth was still closed so no snoring, but I was relaxed enough that it was a non-stop raspberry.
  6. On the ongoing trend of stealing anything that isn’t nailed down, a properly registered buoy designed to collect data on waves for an Estonian university has been reporting its location as Kaliningrad via its onboard GPS. I assume they plan to repurpose the electronics suite.
  7. Approximately one week until my travels are complete and I get to hang with my lady friend!
  8. Did it sway your opinion? Like me, you were likely in Nye’s camp. It was no more effective in swaying supporters of Hamm’s young earth creationist screed. What it was was an opportunity to publicize a fringe belief. Given that its fringe, putting it in a debate scenario is inherently legitimizing because it gives it equal time.
  9. The problem, much like when Bill Nye debated Ken Hamm, is that just by engaging, it lends a sense of credibility.
  10. An appropriate summary of Elmo’s involvement in things.
  11. Impossible to both like and sad eyes at the same time.
  12. We continue to find as much time as schedules currently allow to hang out. Got to have dinner this week and managed her to surprise her with a birthday gift that she found very touching (there were even a few tears). Unfortunately, this week has prep for a big trip so we probably won't be able to hang out until mid-June. Some ground rules are starting to be established which is making me a little more comfortable with where we are. That's headway!
  13. To be fair, there were quite a few studies around that time that focused on on SEL and the disconnect that occurred in larger schools and the effort to create more socially accessible smaller school communities or smaller schools was a point of emphasis in multiple conferences that I’ve attended. Likewise, I’m willing to die on the Common Core hill. Doing something to improve conditions for students with increasingly high mobility rates so that they were either not way ahead or way behind upon arrival at a new school is absolutely valuable (I was that kid back in the 70s but was fortunate to have parents committed to keeping me engaged and former teachers that sent me homework to finish out lesson plans - even with that, I still dealt with a fair amount of social and academic disconnect). It’s unfortunate that Common Core was intentionally conflated with new math strategies which were definitely weird. As my parents thought that the “new math” of my generation was.
  14. Currently reading George E. Koskimaki’s Hell’s Highway: Chronicle of 101st Airborne Div in the Holland Campaign. I’m just to the glider landings at this point. The formatting feels dated with accounts from different participants blurring together, sometimes in confusing ways. He also has demonstrated a penchant for quoting himself (he was a radio operator with the 101st during WWII) as formally as he is does the people who are not the author. Overall, it’s an interesting read that has drawn attention to quite a few things of which I was unaware. The scale, covering the entire Division, leaves less connection with the participants than something like Band of Brothers but seems like a nice intermediate step between Band on the microcosm and Cornelius Ryan’s macro view of Market-Garden A Bridge Too Far.
  15. We've been using Foundry for to relaunch an old school (5E) Champions campaign that we started almost 35 years ago. It's got some elements that are a little frustrating, but overall, it's been a great experience and is allowing a group that are spread all over the place to continue to get together pretty frequently.
  16. Or he just molested the furniture in front of him and they put him in a spiral of disgust.
  17. So, you’re saying the couch molester killed him to bury this story?
  18. I can’t. 27 years with a company. Not once did I feel compelled to talk to my wife about anything under NDA or noted as confidential. Not that I didn’t trust her, I just understand the rules of engagement.
  19. Yeah, I was a Scout leader for a number of years. At least around here, primarily camping and hiking. Some archery, shotgun and rifles on a range, with a focus on range safety. However, I'm north of the Mason-Dixon line.
  20. Hardly surprised. Boy Scouts of America was seeing a reduction in numbers. In response, they became BSA Scouting and allowed girls to join. Now, I think they are Scouting USA. Aside from allowing cootie laden girls into the club, I have to assume that Royal Rangers is more WhiskeyLeaks preference
