SpaceChampion
I thought Ran and Linda were the editors on this... If not, what's your role, Ran? I'm just surprised to hear that there are iterations of the art that you haven't seen.
Ran
We're co-writers, not editors. Anne Groell is the editor. Art is being put together with the oversight of the Anne, Random House's art director, and a specialist packager with a lot of experience with books of this type. That said, I didn't mean to say we didn't look at and approve art. I just meant that sometimes it's clear that some piece of art was obviously wrong in some fashion, in which case the art people ask for revisions without bothering us with it. But we've looked at many dozens of pieces of art, at least, so far, from many different artists.
SpaceChampion
What kinds of things did you write for it?
Ran
All sorts of things. We wrote material covering everything from the Dawn Age to present events.
Aerys Ahai Reborn
But we've looked at many dozens of pieces of art, at least, so far, from many different artists. In the text, will all the art be considered to have been done by many different in-universe artists/maesters? And then will it all be attributed as such in text, alluding to the actual artist maybe? For example, will the lead Maester who is writing this thing say something like, "as you can see by the diagram drawn by Maester Robin ..." if the actual artists last name is Robinson or something? Or how is that going to be handled? A list of (the real) artists and their work in the back/front of the book?
Ran
Admittedly, the art is going to be sort of out-of-world, not really intended to represent what actual art in the book would look like. A fully illuminated text would have been amazing, but it's out of the purview of this sort of work.
The Wolves
Ran are we going to get full artwork on al the Great Castles?WinterfellEyrieSunspearRiverrunCasterly RockDragonstoneHighgardenPykeStorms End Will there be some history on the castles and some layouts to them? Will we be told descriptions of their seats/thrones?
Lord Varys
Will it be marked what's GRRM exclusive material for the book, i.e. stuff he has written that made it (more or less) unedited into the book, compared to the pieces you and Linda wrote, retelling the grand histories GRRM provided as background material? If I remember correctly, then you and Linda wrote the overall history, with GRRM delving deeper into certain issues (in those 'sidebars' that grow way to big). How many maester voices are in there? Are any of the maesters working on the book still alive in-universe during the series? It would have been fun if you had created explicit maester identities for your various pieces and POVs (with Linda's 'maester' being an Alleras type of guy...). Ran
I believe we have art for every castle, yes. Some or most of them are going to be Ted Nasmith's already-published work, plus a couple of new pieces. One of the new pieces is not of a castle, but of something else, and it's a doozy. No, no marking out. There are bits of us appearing in some of the sections he has most written. The closest we get to marking it out is that sometimes we will be offering quotes from Gyldayn -- the guy who wrote the Targaryen history material used in "The Princess and the Queen" -- and those will be direct quotes from GRRM's history. The idea is that a young maester has decided to compile together a sort of ... lets say a Reader's Digest history of the Seven Kingdoms, and with a catalog of foreign places and peoples besides, with the intent of being an accessible volume for educating men and women as to what came before, and what lies beyond the shores of Westeros, as best he can. He draws on the works of many, many maesters and other learned men, shamelessly incorporating it into his work, sometimes (not always) noting the sources. So as far as "voices" go, there are two distinct ones: Yandel, the guy who wrote the bulk of the work, and Gyldayn, the guy who is sometimes quoted (sometimes at great length) by Yandel in the course of writing Targaryen history.
