Cycling - la vuelta, a broken leg won't stop alberto!

the internet is going wild after froome, a notoriously bad bike handler put 8 seconds into everyone in a 10km technical time trial. until there is something more concrete he retains the benefit of the doubt, but it is all very suspicious.

I don't get it. Seems too much to get into him for something like that.

Maybe Froome is getting blamed for the way Wiggins is apparently being treated. Two weeks ago people thought Wiggins would do the Tour, he's focused on it and really wanted to come. But Sky isnt letting him in the the team, and presumably, that is because Froome doesn't want him in. The thinking must then be that Porte is a good enough helper that he doesn't need anyone else. Or maybe Henao. Or Nieve. If Wiggins is willing to submit to Froome being the leader, as he says he is, he should compete.

awesome stage today, contador, despite his previous is a proper stage racer. no idea how wiggo lost 34 seconds in 10km time trial in the tour de suisse.

I was looking at the results of that to see if perhaps the Schlecks might finally be getting their form bac.

No sign of that in this very short TT. Andy lost nearly a minute and Frank 1.20.

Rui Costa also didn't do too well as far as favorites are concerned.

For the Dauphine, someone like van Garderen still has a lot of work to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, next friday the Tour de France starts in the UK, without a former champion who has been in fabulous form, in his own country, where he massively increased the popularity of the sport. bit of a PR gaffe there team sky.

Chris Froome has basically made me want a convicted doper to win. he just comes across as the biggest most petulant bell end ever. and his missus can fuck off as well. Dave Brailsford should have his knighthood taken off him for being such a total pussy.

after the dauphine their are clearly 3 tiers of riders going for the GC.

Froome v Contador are the top 2, contador probably has a stronger team (just), mainly due to injuries, illness and the above mentioned debacle at sky, he is absolutely more tactically astute and experienced. however froome still probably has a bigger engine.

Nibali and Valverde are the second tier, nibs has looked dogshit so far but a 2 time grand tour winner can never be counted out.

the third tier are

Talansky - only won the dauphine cos contador seemed more bothered about fucking with froomes head

van Garderen - shit season so far

Costa - won but didn't convince at the tour de suisse

Porte - only if froome crashes out on the cobbles (which is likely cos he rides a bike like an octapus), if froome goes early porte moves up to the second tier if he is on top form

Van den Broek - has the talent, not sure the mindset

Kreuzinger - again like porte, only if contador fucks up

Mollema - top 5 likely a dream result for him.

the wildcards

Chris Horner - about to turn 60 but won the vuelta last year, no idea how his form is this year as i don't even know if he has raced. final time trial will find him out but the old man can climb a mountain.

Andy Schleck - ridiculous waste of talent, a total headcase clearly. needs to sort it out soon before its too late.

I don't really know what Froome has or hasn't said or done (other than not getting along with Wiggins), but for me.. never Contador. I really, really, really can't believe he's clean, considering the past.

Still, he's a great tactical rider, no questions there.

As to Schleck: he should have learned to time trial. He looks completely like a fish out of water on the TT-bike.

Honestly, I was surprised Wiggins and Froome both stayed on Team Sky this year, it's been obvious for a while that one of them was going to lose out (on the personal side of things, allegedly, Wiggins still hasn't paid Froome the bonus he's due from the 2012 Tour). I understand there are strong rumours about Wiggins going to Orica Greenedge next year.

Shame Quintana's not riding, I enjoyed watching him last year.

i've been watching the highlights from last year and if moviestar hadn't had all their eggs in valverde's basket he would have been a lot closer to froome. i see him walking the vuelta this year, and being slight favorite for the tour next year. amazing talent, and despite his size and generally pleasant demeanour he clearly has the steel in him thats needed to dominate other riders.

It's a shame that Quintana and Uran are not competing here. They wold have been very close.
Team Sky does not look that formidable me this year. Only Porte and Nieve are potential strong climbers when it really gets tough. Contador will have Kreuziger, Roche and Rogers I expect.

I think Valverde will again fall short. He's just not good enough a climber of a tt specialist. Where is he ging to gain ground on Nibli, Froome or Contador? He's weaker in both disciplines. I understand why Movistar wanted to honour him with one more chances, and in the process have Quintana pick up a Giro win, but it's not going to work, he'd have to do very well just to hit the no.3 spot. Which I don't think he will.

Rui Costa is another top5 guy potentially. Possibly closer.
Andy Schleck, I was hoping that after he had the whole year to prepare, he would be back to his old form.
I was just hoping for it I can't believe he's going to be this shitty forever, I mean why would he be, even his brother is with him tyhis season. But he was nowhere to be seen in the Switzerland Tour, nowhere. It looks bad once again for him. It's such a shame because I loved his clashes with Contador. One has to suspect that Schlecks complete lack of performance these last few years has to do with having been on dope before.

he just smashed the spanish TT championships. not against a great field but still a step up for him. whether the improvement in this will impact on his climbing remains to be seen. i hope he gangs up with contador and nibali against froome.

kreuzinger has biological passport issues and is out of the tour. contador loses his key support rider (though i'd say mick rogers is more important due to his tactical nous), sky rub their hands together with glee. cycling news forums are losing their shit over this being a sky orchestrated dirty tricks campaign with the aid of the UCI.

And Eurosport is on. The start appears a bit chaotic. Carlton certainly doesn't have a clue what's going on. Didn't think William looked very comfortable during the Marseillaise.
