jaimereborn
He was Lord Commander as Brynden Rivers.. then what happened? Maybe we'll find out more about why he went to the Wall in the first place in later Dunk and Egg novels, as he was sent there by Aegon V, along with his brother Maester Aemon. Perhaps he always had intentions to go north of the Wall.. or someone else had those intentions for him. Trying to add up all the pieces... Bloodraven's mother was from House Blackwood, who favoured the Old Gods. House Blackwood's sigil is a dead weirwood surrounded by ravens - seems pretty fitting. He was in love with his half-sister Shiera Seastar, whose mother had used dark forces to prolong her youth and beauty. Melisandre anyone? Bloodraven and Melisandre have been pitted against each other - could this be Brynden Rivers and Shiera Seastar in their new guises? A lot happens in 100 years - perhaps Shiera travelled to the east and became 'Melisandre', having bought into the 'prince that was promised/Azor Ahai' prophecy and wishing to see it fulfilled. This may have brought her in touch with the Red God. So many strands of thought, but I'm writing up a proper study on Bloodraven, Bran and the Reeds, will hopefully post soon. Would be great to hear peoples' ideas in the meantime.
Leonardo
The last greenseer... I'd say he went north of the wall because the COTF were there and he was going either out of duty, or to gain even more power. While he is already pretty baws at the time of him being hand, I have a feeling he didn't have the full extent of his abilities yet, and that he too needed some COTF yoda type crash course training
aryagonnakill#2
Mel is not Shiera Seastar, but its possible she's her daughter.
Deep Like Davos
Its possible he wasn't even sent to the wall but volunteered. He was free of the black cells for the Council that chose Aegon. BR (i love how that could be Brynden Rivers or BloodRaven, makes it easy) might have known his true destiny while still in the cells of KL. aryagonnakill#2
My personal theory is that BR went to the weirwood grove north of castle black to pray, and that he had darksister with him, and a bodyguard. They were then attacked by white walkers and BR lived because he had Valyrian steal while the bodyguard died and became coldhands.

Northernmonkey
He was probably guided to the cave by another greenseer, in the same way he guided Bran there.

Jon's Queen Consort
I believe for the same reason Bran went there. Sure Bran went to be cured but he had the dreams. Same with Bloodraven.
Ser Cold Fingers
To get to the other side of the Wall. I figured this line was coming at some point...
Saint Saga
It would be funny to see Varys reaction to Bloodraven being alive.... if he is really a Blackfyre supporter.
Dorian Martell
As lord commander he was probably bored of fapping and moletown so he headed north to get some bug eyed four fingered ctof poon. then he woke up in tree roots and the rest is history
Lady Blizzardborn
My personal theory is that BR went to the weirwood grove north of castle black to pray, and that he had darksister with him, and a bodyguard. They were then attacked by white walkers and BR lived because he had Valyrian steal while the bodyguard died and became coldhands. Interesting. I think Coldhands has been dead even longer than that though. Makes sense that he took a few people out and never came back so they figured all of them were dead. Then Coldhands leads him to the cave and Leaf hooks him up to the weirnet where he discovered some really entertaining historical documentaries. A hundred years or so later, he realizes he's been sitting there all this time watching TV and those wily CotF never even brought the popcorn! But now he's figured out that "the snow show" is about the Others and he's stuck in the tree so he needs help. He tries Euron, but that kid has issues, so he has to wait for Bran and hope they have enough time. ETA: I have this theory that the dragonsteel is dragon bone. But...what if Valyrian Steel is actually made of dragon bone and that's why it's so rare? The Valyrian smiths put out this hooey about spells woven into the swords when really they've just got a secret base. And the doom was caused by the dragons getting angry about being killed so that people could make swords out of them. 2nd ETA: if you can't tell whether I'm serious or not, that's ok. I can't tell either at this point.
SirMichael
It would be funny to see Varys reaction to Bloodraven being alive.... if he is really a Blackfyre supporter. Bloodraven was a loyalist during the rebellion, not a Blackfyre supporter. While Varys would likely find his survival interesting he'd just hope he stayed in the north. Not sure what he did or didn't know at the time, but he might have been contacted by the previous greenseer already.
And Stannis Laughed
My personal theory is that BR went to the weirwood grove north of castle black to pray, and that he had darksister with him, and a bodyguard. I wonder if BR ever had any interactions with the wildlings.
BitsOfBrains
I kind of doubt he volunteered. Maester Aemon mentioned that BR was sent with a pile of scumbags dubbed his, "honor guard" which really sounds like a "fools crown" "don't let the portcullis impale you on the way out" kind of thing. That is just my reading of it though. As to why he was North of the Wall, that kind of seems to be where the action is. Maybe he wanted to dig up some giants graves. Maybe he wanted to meet some CotF. Maybe he wanted to get a wildling girlfriend. Maybe he needed ingredients for his spells. Maybe he wanted to fake his own death so he could become a tree root fungus.
Archmaester Drew
My personal theory is that BR went to the weirwood grove north of castle black to pray, and that he had darksister with him, and a bodyguard. They were then attacked by white walkers and BR lived because he had Valyrian steal while the bodyguard died and became coldhands. That's pretty much my take too. Perhaps Bloodraven knew about High Heart throne and somehow learned of the throne North of the Wall. :)
