US Politics: Shotgun Wedding edition

Tracker,

There is no "design". The entire thing is completely ad hoc with no long term planning whatsoever. My beef with the ACA, aside from my continuing (but now irrelevant) objection to the mandate, has been that it doubles down on the ad hoc structure.

I don't disagree and even share your frustration, but unfortunately a redesign of the system was in 2009, and remains in 2015, a political impossibility. The main problem is that one of the two major parties doesn't really think the health care system ever had a problem, except that too many people were suing it. Without the cooperation of Republicans, bottom-up reform is a near-fantasy, so we're left to improve the ad hoc system we have.

If they're not willing to do their job it's better they quit. We already have enough people in other professions who won't do their jobs (like pharmacists who won't fill birth control) and often get away with it when they should actually be looking for a new line of work that doesn't interfere with their belief system.

And they let her do it. It speaks worse of them than it does her. The more contempt she shows them, the harder they try to please her.

You wonder if her team spends time coming up with ways to humiliate the press, like Ramsey Bolton

Why o why am I reminded of Bush II's 'Free Speech Zones'?

Or on a more mundane level, ordinary folks who, as a result of the Patriot Act, get their camera's confiscated if they happen to take a pic of the wrong building?

I only just read this, so apologies if someone already mentioned it:

And so the debate over the limits of freedom of speech and religion continues.

Personally my favor part is:

"But yet I'm going to take more persecution than them because I'm standing for what I believe in."

Hillary keeps the press penned in like livestock. On a public street.

That's funny as fuck. And they went along with it? Well if you act like a sheep..

I love the Conservative butthurt in the responses...

"This doesn't look good for the first amendment on Independence Day"

"Somewhere, Edward R Murrow punches a wall"

"But they did ask her some tough questions. What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Worthless commie reporters."

Prepare your fainting couches.

“I come from a state that has basically no gun control, but the people in my state understand pretty clearly that guns in Vermont are not the same thing as guns in Chicago or guns in Los Angeles.

“In our state, guns are used for hunting. In Chicago, they are used by kids in gangs killing other kids, people shooting at police officers, shooting down innocent people.”

Let us take a minute and consider in what other way Vermont might be different from Chicago and LA? Sanders SEEMS to be saying that while white folk owning guns is non problematic, minorities tend to kill each other and gun down cops and innocent bystanders. Literally wtf?

Is he lying? Is vermont suffering heavily under gun violence?

Yes, different situation demand different approaches, yes. And talking about a terretory the size of the US it should be obvious that you are dealing with a lot of different situations. Thats why the founding fathers thought it would be a great idea to organize the US as a federal system and not a centralist state. Thats why you are called The United States of America and not The State of America.

Or he's just noticing factual differences between urban and rural gun use/abuse and you're just projecting your own biases onto his statements? At least, that's how it SEEMS to me.

Yeah, I thought you conservatives were big on states' rights. After all, that's why the South seceded, yes?

Yes, in addition to the state's right to slavery, they also liked the state's right to force other states to return runaway slaves and the state's right to force western territories to have slavery. That's three state's rights right there. Although I'm not clear on why they should have had the right to force states to do something when they found the idea they that might be forced to do something so unappealing they seceded and fired the first shots.

Sanders is wrong on guns. Gun deaths are a major problem in Vermont, mostly due to suicide by gun. Vermont's gun death rate is much higher than neighboring states with tighter gun control. It's overall suicide rate is also higher than neighboring states.

He's not wrong that there's a difference place to place in how guns kill people, but the solution is simple and the same across the board- fewer guns, fewer deaths.
