Apparently Trump didn't help get the three UCLA basketball players out of China, which means even LaVar Ball of all people is more honest than Trump:

A predictable response from the EU, it's 2002 all over again:

Harley and Bourbon tariffs are aimed directly at Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell, i'm guessing.

Man Levi's were already quite expensive (by US standards) when I was in the UK for grad school.  If this Levi's tariff goes down, next time I visit I might have to pack a suitcase of blue jeans and bourbon.

Have you ever seen any studies that track the number of unopposed races? It would be interesting to know the average number and see if there are any unusual swings.

Doing some very quick googling, apparently there were 30 unopposed races in 2014 - 16 Dem and 14 GOP (subtracting Sessions' Senate seat).  Off the top of my head, that sounds in line with data collection I did about three years ago on House races from 2008-2012.  Seeing if there's been any corresponding rise in unopposed seats with the increase in polarization and decrease in competitive seats is a fairly interesting research question - could be a quick and easy write-up in a 2nd/3rd tier journal - but I've never seen/not aware of any such study.  Also, should be noted I didn't check how many Dem seats are running unopposed, but as of right now just from skimming Wikipedia it's significantly more than 6.

You're fake news!

You know what's real news? I have multiple sources reporting that a certain WEFFL media insider is still waking up in the middle of the night with cold sweats because she can't stop dreaming about what could have been with McDaniels and the broken Cro-Magnon.

Facts!

Let me know when you're done so I can collect my royalties!

:P

In all seriousness though, why do you say second or third tier? I think there could be more to be gained from such a study than you're giving credit. After you look for a trend you could have a lot of fun digging into the why and seeing if there's some greater correlation. For example, wouldn't it be interesting if you find out that a lot of unopposed Congressional districts are theoretically less safe than districts that regularly have challengers from the party that never wins them?

Ha!  If only you got paid for publishing in journals.

Because it'd be a data-driven project.  Top-tier journals require a theory that says something new, and then well-executed supported evidence that usually employs cutting-edge methods.  If you could build a theory for why there was a rise in unopposed seats that isn't derivative of the extant lit, you're a better man than I.

Sure, that'd be a really interesting finding.  Doubt that'd be the finding, but if it was, and you could convincingly explain why, now we're talking.

No takers on this Russian sex coach story? It's one of those things that you just hope would be true, a billion to one shot that it is. A Russian high-end hooker having 18 hours of voice recordings about collusion among the kleptocracy? That'd be instant classic.

It's Friday though. No DACA deal.

I was reading the comments section to a Guardian story about her, and one guy said "Just the kind of person you would believe, right?" If she had tossed out a few facts with her plea for help the story might get more traction, I think.

Assuming you mean this story:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2018/02/27/in-thai-jail-after-sex-training-a-model-who-rattled-russian-elite-asks-u-s-for-help/

It sounds too good to be true. If she does have anything that explosive, I assume she'll be served polonium tea in her Thai prison soon enough.

Funnily, I am 100% ready to treat any actual evidence she has as relevant (maybe not 'credible')

That being said, it's a far fetched tail but Modern Russians have a reputation for a certain low cunning. Probably societal PTSD from the -Don't fear the enemy, fear our own- days.

We get the end to the story only if she ends up dead within the next few months.

Cadet Bone Spurs starts a trade war!  Huzzahs all around!  A great new war of GWOT; Global War Of Tariffs!  The best GWOT, only really great people fight the GWOT.  You'll see so much winning with the GWOT.  I’m not even saying that in a braggadocios way, believe me!

Not to sure about this one, last few pairs of Levi's I bought were made in Mexico.

Tail should be tale, but for a hooker that works too.

I was thinking earlier about the more salacious details of the Steele dossier, and how when that first hit the news the vast majority of people (myself included, honestly) dismissed the Russian prostitute bit as likely nothing more than juicy gossip.  Too good to be true.  Now that time has passed and we have learned that Trump likes to plow porn stars and attempt to pay them off while married to Melania, the prostitution/ pee incident detailed in the Steele dossier no longer feels all that hard to believe.

I haven’t seen the media make a connection between the porn stars and the alleged Russian prostitute incident in terms of the former making the latter seem like it might just be in character for Trump - but when you add in Trump not enforcing the sanctions against Russia and Vlad Putin giving bellicose nuclear weapons speeches with a graphic of Florida blowing up on the background with nary a peep from Mr. Tough Guy As Long As Its Little Rocket Man sabre rattling.... hmm, really makes one wonder.

If I were a betting man and had to pick yeah or nay on the pee tape being real I would bet that it is.  The evidence that there's a real Russian connection is all over the place, and there's also ample evidence that Trump needed Russian funding and that they saw a great opportunity with him.

Actually, the only part of the story that I find hard to believe is the idea that this would represent some kind of leverage over Trump.  How would this hurt him with his base?

An actual tape of the American president cavorting with Russian hookers (particularly with pee) might finally be a bridge too far.  Probably.  Maybe.  But some of it could be business related too, owes them money so is doing them favors, has engaged in shady business deals, etc, etc.  Whatever the case I do believe it’s becoming more and more obvious that they have something on him.

I keep asking myself, what have they got on him. I don’t understand how Republicans can keep ignoring that question.
