TerraPrime
Anyone wanna venture a guess on location? I know Rome was filmed in Italy a lot (though not exclusively, right?). I think countries like Hungary or Poland, where location fees are low, would work well with the setting. Other thoughts?
Ran
The last I recall, George mentioned Spain and the Czech Republic were high on the list of possible shooting locations.

admiral_atheist
Well, I truly hope they will discover all the fascinating wonders of Hungary's locations, because I just happen to live there. :) The BBC series Robin Hood and HBO's John Adams were partly shot here, so that's a good sign. Fingers crossed. :)
The Anti-Targ
No doubt they'll want to keep production costs down to improve the viability of the series. Whether that means finding as many real-life medieval settings as possible (a la all over Europe), or it means custom built sets will be a factor in shooting locations. Europe seems to be the most sensible option as it has castles in all the key environmental settings. I imagine north Africa / Eastern Mediterranean for the more arid settings of Dany's journey. Dorne=Spain aye? OTOH much of the story will take place in-doors or in places where a purpose-built set is better. King's Landing will have to be a purpose built set, and a Bigature for the establishing shots.

EHK for Darwin
Czech Republic was my first instinct. Or someplace else with a variety of old, intact architecture that isn't enormously expensive.

The Wolf Maid
Damn. The Czech Republic has a lot of castles. I particularly like this one and this too. This one is in Slovakia and has been used in movies before, but it still looks neat. As for Spain...

McCloskey
Anyone know where they film The Tudors? I assume some of its in England but alot of the external shots seem CGI or at least could be shot eleswhere. AGOT could do the same thing... Ran
Ireland I believe. It was one of the places being looked at early on for ASoIaF, but I'm not sure that that is the case any longer, given GRRM's last remarks concerning Spain and the Czech Republic being the frontrunners. Randall
Since I'm from Spain, there are some basic searches of interesting places we've, not so much distant ones for others (it's a small country, if you compare with US) Segovia (nice Alcazar) http://images.google.es/images?hl=es&q...sa=N&tab=wi Granada (nice Alhambra, I view it as the palace in Dorne) http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes Monegros Desert (yes, it's in Spain) http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes Monzon's Castle (near that desert) http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes Pirineos (Pyrenees - freaking big and snowy mountains) http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes Garrotxa (a zone with volcanos and interesting woods) http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl...r+im%C3%A1genes http://images.google.com/images?&um=1&...t=0&ndsp=18 Cuenca - ciudad encantada (if you've seen this and you don't remember where, it was in Conan) http://images.google.com/images?um=1&h...r+im%C3%A1genes Costa Brava - In Mediterranean Sea, at North, nice gulfs, rocks and so http://images.google.com/images?um=1&h...r+im%C3%A1genes that's for now
Brude
Eastern Europe is also ideal because there has been a lot of professional production going on there for years now and the crews are fantastic, apparently. Though they tend to work on lower-budget fare, they are very, very good at working efficiently and their salaries are cheaper, too.
Spring Bass
Europe would seem to be perfect in terms of scenery (I don't know about production costs). You've got pretty much almost all the different terrains.
Lord O' Bones
I dunno, but I pity the person who has to build a giant wall of ice.
This, much like some of the castles will likely have to be CG for external long distance shots. GRRM describes these places pretty specifically and I'd imagine you'd have a hard time finding a match for Pyke, The Twins or The Ayrie. Storm's End, Dragonstone, Riverrun, and Winterfell could be problematic too. Or maybe no one cares about that level of detail and I'll just have to suffer quietly. Tears of Lys
I dunno, but I pity the person who has to build a giant wall of ice.
 Good one. As much as I admire everyone's castles, the ones that appear in aSoIaF are practically characters themselves. They're very specifically described. It's better to do a CGI shot then cut to an interior next to a stone wall, throne room, dungeon, etc. While I'm at it, I'll continue my lobbying effort in this thread: (pasted from Oh, Joy! thread) Well, we don't have many castles, but lots of riverlands and forests! film it in Michigan! and Winter IS coming, y'know. I'll even throw myself in as a hapless peasant woman trudging toward King's Landing. :D Under Michigan's program, producers get 40 cents back for every $1 they spend on filming (double the existing rebate) and qualify for an additional 2% spending rebate if the film is shot in designated "core communities," including Detroit and Flint. We even have lots of big empty buildings that could be used for interior shots. Hell, that's ALL we've got lately.
